The Eight Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā, Chapter Forty-five. Question: Blessed One, how should a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom? How should they realize the Perfection of Wisdom? How should they cultivate the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, one should practice the Perfection of Wisdom by the quiescence of form, by the impermanence of form, by the illusion of form, by the insubstantiality of form. One should practice the Perfection of Wisdom by the quiescence of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, by the impermanence of consciousness, by the illusion of consciousness, by the insubstantiality of consciousness. Furthermore, if someone says, "How should one realize the Perfection of Wisdom?" it is by realizing emptiness like the sky that one should realize the Perfection of Wisdom. Furthermore, if someone says, "How should one cultivate the Perfection of Wisdom?" it is by cultivating emptiness like the sky that one should cultivate the Perfection of Wisdom. Question: Blessed One, for how long should a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom to be called a practitioner of the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, from the arising of the first thought (藏文:སེམས་དང་པོ་བསྐྱེད་པ།) until one sits at the seat of the Bodhi tree, one should practice the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus, one should realize it. Thus, one should cultivate it. Question: Blessed One, should one practice with a continuous stream of thought, without separation or dispersion? He said: Subhuti, one should practice the Perfection of Wisdom without giving an opportunity to other mental activities. One should meditate on going to the other shore. By all means, one should practice the Perfection of Wisdom in such a way that the mind and mental phenomena do not flow. In this way, one should realize it. In this way, one should meditate. The questioner asks: Blessed One, does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, by practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, realizing the Perfection of Wisdom, and meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom, attain omniscience? The Blessed One replies: Subhuti, it is not so. The questioner asks: Blessed One, then is it by not meditating? The Blessed One replies: Subhuti, it is not so. The questioner asks: Blessed One, then is it by meditating and also meditating, and by not meditating and also not meditating? The Blessed One replies: Subhuti, it is not so. The questioner asks: Blessed One, then is it by neither meditating nor not meditating? The Blessed One replies: Subhuti, it is not so. The questioner asks: Blessed One, then how does one attain omniscience? The Blessed One replies: Subhuti, it is according to suchness as it is. The questioner asks: What is suchness like? The Blessed One replies: The limit of reality is as it is. The questioner asks: What is the limit of reality like? The Blessed One replies: The realm of Dharma is as it is. The questioner asks: What is the realm of Dharma like? The Blessed One replies: The realm of self is as it is, the realm of sentient beings is as it is, the realm of life is as it is, and the realm of person is as it is. The questioner asks: Blessed One, what is the nature of the realm of self and the realm of person? The Blessed One replies: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think there is something to be fixated on in self or sentient beings? The questioner asks: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One says: Subhuti, if there is nothing to be fixated on in self or sentient beings, how can the realm of sentient beings be established? Moreover, are the perfections of diligence, patience, and discipline also not to be designated? Is the perfection of generosity also not to be designated? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the perfection of wisdom is not to be designated. Is it conditioned or unconditioned? Is it the Dharma of the Hearers or the Dharma of the Solitary Buddhas? Even among all Dharmas, there is nothing to be designated. He asked: Blessed One, if all Dharmas are not to be designated, then Blessed One, for what reason is the sentient being of hell designated? Is the birthplace of animals designated? Is the world of Yama designated? Are humans and gods designated? Are Stream-enterers, Arhats, Solitary Buddhas, and the Unsurpassed Perfectly Complete Buddhas designated? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think there is a designation for sentient beings? He replied: Blessed One, that is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if sentient beings are not designated, then how can sentient beings in hell, the birthplace of animals, the world of Yama, gods, humans, Stream-enterers, Arhats, Solitary Buddhas, and Perfectly Complete Buddhas be designated? Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he should train in these non-designable Dharmas. He asked: Blessed One, then when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, should he train in form? Should he train in feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness? Should he train up to the state of all-knowingness? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, one should train in form without abandoning or adding. Up to the state of all-knowingness, one should train without abandoning or adding. He asked: Blessed One, how should one train without abandoning or adding up to the state of all-knowingness?
