Said: The Buddha told Subhuti: One should learn non-arising and non-cessation. Said: World Honored One, how should one learn that form has no arising and no cessation? World Honored One, how should one learn that even up to the all-knowing wisdom has no arising and no cessation? The Buddha told Subhuti: Namely, without any creation, one should not cultivate the aggregates, nor should one destroy them, but should learn. Said: World Honored One, how should one learn without any creation? The Buddha told Subhuti: If one sees that all dharmas are empty of their own nature, then one should learn without any creation. Said: World Honored One, how should one learn that all dharmas are empty of their own nature? The Buddha told Subhuti: Form should be viewed as empty of form. Feeling should be viewed as empty of feeling. Perception should be viewed as empty of perception. Aggregates should be viewed as empty of aggregates. Consciousness should be viewed as empty of consciousness. The eye should be viewed as empty of the eye. The mind should be viewed as empty of the mind. Inner emptiness should be viewed as empty of inner emptiness. Emptiness of own nature, even up to emptiness of own nature, should be viewed as empty of emptiness of own nature. The meditations should be viewed as empty of meditations. Cessation attainment, even up to cessation attainment, should be viewed as empty of cessation attainment. The mindfulnesses should be viewed as empty of mindfulnesses. Even up to Bodhi should be viewed as empty of Bodhi. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should thus learn that all dharmas are empty of their own nature. Said: World Honored One, if form is empty of form, even up to Bodhi is empty of Bodhi, World Honored One, how then should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practice the Prajnaparamita? The Buddha told Subhuti: Non-practice is the practice of Prajnaparamita by a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Said: World Honored One, for what reason is non-practice, the Prajna

is the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom. The Buddha said: Subhuti, thus, one does not focus on the Perfection of Wisdom, nor does one focus on the Bodhisattva, nor does one focus on the practice. One does not focus on what is practiced, by whom it is practiced, or where it is practiced. Subhuti, whatever is elaborated upon, all of that is not focused upon. That is the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom by a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Asked: Blessed One, if there is no practice, is it the practice of the Perfection of Wisdom? Blessed One, how then does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is a beginner practice the Perfection of Wisdom? The Buddha said: Subhuti, in this, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is a beginner, from the moment of generating the first thought, should thus learn all dharmas in a way that does not focus. When giving alms, one should give alms in a way that does not focus. When guarding morality, one should guard morality in a way that does not focus. When cultivating patience, one should cultivate patience in a way that does not focus. When exerting effort, one should exert effort in a way that does not focus. When entering into samadhi, one should enter into samadhi in a way that does not focus. When meditating on wisdom, one should meditate on wisdom in a way that does not focus, even up to the state of all-knowingness. Asked: Blessed One, by what measure does one become unfocused? By what measure does one become focused? The Buddha said: To the extent that there is duality, to that extent there is focus. Non-duality is non-focus. Asked: Blessed One, what is duality? The Buddha said: Between the eye and the form, between the mind and the dharma, between enlightenment and Buddhahood, Subhuti, that is duality. Asked: Blessed One, what is non-duality? The Buddha said: There is no between the eye and the form, there is no between the mind and the dharmas, there is no between enlightenment and Buddhahood, Subhuti, that is non-duality. Asked: Blessed One, is the unfocused object unfocused?

Is it a ground? Or are neither observed? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, because there is an object, it is also not unobserved. Because there is no object, it is also not unobserved. Subhuti, however, the equality of object and non-object is non-object. Subhuti, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should thus train in the equality of object and non-object. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas who train in this way will have no object in the Perfection of Wisdom. Asked: Blessed One, if Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice the Perfection of Wisdom, not clinging to objects and not clinging to non-objects, then Blessed One, how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, perfect the grounds from ground to ground? And having perfected the grounds from ground to ground, how do they attain omniscience? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practicing the Perfection of Wisdom do not abide in objects and perfect the grounds from ground to ground. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abiding in objects, cannot perfect the grounds from ground to ground. Why is that? Subhuti, the Perfection of Wisdom also has no object, and enlightenment also has no object, and those who practice the Perfection of Wisdom also have no object. Subhuti, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should thus train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Asked: Blessed One, if the Perfection of Wisdom also has no object, and enlightenment also has no object, and those who practice for enlightenment also have no object, then how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, distinguish among all phenomena that are empty of inherent existence, saying, 'This is form, this is feeling, this is perception, these are formations, this is consciousness, this is between enlightenment'?
