Attaining complete enlightenment. Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva perfect the six Paramitas and come very close to the All-Knowingness?" After he had spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, here, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Paramita of Generosity, does he see hungry beings? Does he see miserly beings, and those with poor clothing, and those with coarse garments, and those with poor bedding and lacking bedding, then he thinks: 'In any way, in that Buddha-field where I attain complete and perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, may beings completely lack and not arise with such faults, and may the beings of that Buddha-field have such enjoyment and use, just like the enjoyment and use of the gods of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Delighting in Emanation, and the Controlling Others' Emanations, therefore one should practice the Paramita of Generosity.' One should thus carefully consider. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Paramita of Generosity in this way, it is perfecting the Paramita of Generosity. Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Paramita of Morality, does he see beings who kill, and beings up to wrong views? Does he see beings with short lives, and those who are ugly, and those who are weak, and those who suffer much harm, and those who are of little majesty, and those who have little enjoyment, and those who are of low birth, and those who have incomplete limbs, then he thinks: 'In any way, in that Buddha-field where I attain complete and perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, may beings completely lack and not arise with such faults.'

One should thus carefully consider. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in this way perfects the Paramita of Morality. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Paramita of Patience, if he sees beings thinking of harming each other, striking with wood, clods, and weapons, and even causing the interruption of life, he should think: "In any case, in that Buddha-field where I attain complete and perfect enlightenment, may such faults as these be completely non-existent and not occur for all beings, and may all beings become like the minds of parents, like the minds of siblings, and may they become minds of loving-kindness and minds of benefit, and may I practice enlightenment in that way." One should thus carefully consider. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in this way perfects the Paramita of Patience and is close to complete and perfect unsurpassed enlightenment. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Paramita of Diligence, if he sees beings with weak diligence, or lazy ones, or those who have no joy in the three vehicles, or those who turn their backs on the three vehicles, or those who are far from entering the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, or the Buddha Vehicle, he should think: "In any case, in that Buddha-field where I attain complete and perfect enlightenment, may such faults as these be completely non-existent and not occur for all beings, and may all beings undertake steadfast diligence and completely pass into peace by whichever of the three vehicles—the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, or the Great Vehicle. May I practice the Paramita of Diligence in that way." One should thus carefully consider. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in this way perfects the Param

is completed, and is close to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Dhyana, does he see sentient beings obscured by the five obscurations, namely, desire for sensual pleasures, malice, sloth and torpor, restlessness and remorse, and doubt? Does he see sentient beings who have entered these five obscurations? Does he see sentient beings who are separated from the first dhyana up to the fourth dhyana? Does he see sentient beings who are separated from loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, the attainment of the sphere of infinite space, the attainment of the sphere of infinite consciousness, the attainment of the sphere of nothingness, and the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception? If he sees them, he should think: 'In any case, in the Buddha-field where I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, I must ensure that sentient beings are completely free from and do not give rise to these faults.' Thus, one should practice the Perfection of Dhyana, purify the Buddha-field, and ripen sentient beings. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in this way will perfect the Perfection of Dhyana and be close to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Furthermore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, does he see sentient beings with perverse wisdom? Does he see those who are separated from the correct view of the mundane and supramundane? Does he see those who speak of non-events? Does he see those who speak of existence? Does he see those who speak of non-existence? Does he see those who speak of permanence? Does he see sentient beings who speak of annihilation? If he sees them, he should think: 'In any case, in the Buddha-field where I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha, I must ensure that sentient beings are completely free from and do not give rise to these faults, and how should I practice to purify the Buddha-field?'
