The five faculties are unclassifiable. The six sense bases are unclassifiable. The four formless absorptions are unclassifiable. The aggregates, elements, and sense bases are unclassifiable. Vipāka (karmic result) is unclassifiable. Subhūti, these are called the unclassifiable dharmas. Subhūti asked: "Bhagavan, what are the worldly dharmas?" The Bhagavan replied: "Subhūti, the worldly dharmas are the five aggregates, the twelve sense bases, the eighteen elements, the paths of the ten virtuous actions, the four dhyānas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the five superknowledges, and all worldly dharmas whatsoever, except for the supramundane dharmas. These are called the worldly dharmas." Subhūti asked: "Bhagavan, what are the supramundane dharmas?" The Bhagavan replied: "The supramundane dharmas are the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the noble eightfold path, the emptiness liberation gate, the signless liberation gate, the wishless liberation gate, the faculty of 'I will know the unknown,' the faculty of knowledge, the faculty of 'having known,' samādhi with investigation and analysis, samādhi without investigation but with analysis, samādhi without investigation and without analysis, knowledge, liberation, mindfulness, awareness, appropriate attention, and the eight liberations. What are the eight? One who has form contemplates forms: this is the first liberation. One who is without inner form contemplates outer forms: this is the second liberation. One is intent only on what is beautiful: this is the third liberation. Utterly transcending all perceptions of form, the perceptions of resistance cease, and not attending to perceptions of diversity, thinking, 'Space is endless.'

Then, having accomplished and abided in the sphere of infinite space, this is the fourth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space in every way, thinking, 'Consciousness is infinite,' having accomplished and abided in the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the fifth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness in every way, thinking, 'There is nothing at all,' having accomplished and abided in the sphere of nothingness, this is the sixth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness in every way, having accomplished and abided in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the seventh liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception in every way, having accomplished and abided in the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the eighth liberation. These are the eight liberations. There are nine successive abidings in meditative absorption. What are the nine? They are: being secluded from desires, being secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, having accomplished and abided in the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion and endowed with joy and bliss; then, free from initial application and sustained application, with inner purity, the mind becoming unified, without initial application, without sustained application, having accomplished and abided in the second dhyana, which is born of concentration and endowed with joy and bliss; then, being free from attachment to joy, abiding in equanimity, being mindful and possessing clear awareness, experiencing bliss with the body, the noble ones declare, 'He abides in bliss with mindfulness, is equanimous'; having accomplished and abided in the third dhyana, which is without joy; then, having abandoned bliss, and having previously abandoned suffering, with the disappearance of mental pleasure and mental displeasure, being neither pleasure nor suffering, with equanimity and mindfulness completely purified, having accomplished and abided in the fourth dhyana; then, having completely transcended all perceptions of form in every way, with the disappearance of perceptions of resistance, and not attending to perceptions of diversity, thinking, 'Space is infinite,' having accomplished and abided in the sphere of infinite space; then, having completely transcended infinite space in every way,
