Is there a Bodhisattva? Does a Bodhisattva possess the suchness of form? Is a Bodhisattva something that lacks the suchness of form? He replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. The Bhagavan said: Likewise, do you think that the suchness of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness is a Bodhisattva? Is a Bodhisattva something other than the suchness of consciousness? Does consciousness possess the suchness of a Bodhisattva? Does a Bodhisattva possess the suchness of consciousness? Is a Bodhisattva something that lacks the suchness of consciousness? He replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. The Bhagavan said: Likewise, do you think that the suchness of the elements, sources, dependent origination up to old age and death is a Bodhisattva? Is a Bodhisattva something other than the suchness of old age and death? Does the suchness of old age and death possess a Bodhisattva? Does a Bodhisattva possess the suchness of old age and death? Is a Bodhisattva something that lacks the suchness of old age and death? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, that is not so. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, what reason do you have for saying that form is not a Bodhisattva, and that the suchness of the aggregates, elements, sources, dependent origination up to old age and death is not a Bodhisattva? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, since sentient beings do not exist at all and are not perceived, how could form become a Bodhisattva? How could something other than form become a Bodhisattva? How could a Bodhisattva exist in form? How could form exist in a Bodhisattva? How could something without form become a Bodhisattva? How could feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness become a Bodhisattva? How could something other than consciousness become a Bodhisattva? How could a Bodhisattva exist in consciousness?

How could it be that if there is consciousness, how could one become a Bodhisattva? How could it be that if there is no consciousness, one could become a Bodhisattva? Likewise, apply this to realms, sources, and dependent origination. O Blessed One, if sentient beings are utterly nonexistent and cannot be found, how could old age and death become a Bodhisattva? How could something other than old age and death become a Bodhisattva? How could there be a Bodhisattva in old age and death? How could there be old age and death in a Bodhisattva? How could something without old age and death become a Bodhisattva? O Blessed One, if sentient beings are utterly nonexistent and cannot be found, how could the suchness of form be perceived in this? Likewise, apply this to aggregates, realms, sources, and dependent origination. O Blessed One, if sentient beings are utterly nonexistent and cannot be found, how could the suchness of old age and death be perceived in that? That is not the place. The Blessed One said: Well done! Well done! Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should thus train in the Perfection of Wisdom by not perceiving sentient beings. Subhuti, whatever you say, "O Blessed One, thus, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva," O Blessed One, what dharma is the designation "Bodhisattva Mahasattva"? Subhuti, what do you think? Is the term "Bodhisattva" a designation for form? Is the term "Bodhisattva" a designation for feeling, perception, formations, or consciousness? Subhuti said: O Blessed One, it is not. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Is the term "Bodhisattva" a designation for the permanence of form? Is the term "Bodhisattva" a designation for the impermanence of form? Likewise, is the term "Bodhisattva" a designation for the pleasure of form, the suffering of form, the self of form, the non-self of form, the peace of form?

And, do you think that "form not being pacified" is another expression for a Bodhisattva? Likewise, do you think that what is called a Bodhisattva is feeling, perception, formations, and that consciousness is permanent, consciousness is impermanent, consciousness is happiness, consciousness is suffering, consciousness is having a self, consciousness is being without a self, consciousness is pacified, consciousness is not being pacified, is another expression for a Bodhisattva? Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that what is called a Bodhisattva is form being emptiness, form not being emptiness, form having signs, form not having signs, form having aspirations, form not having aspirations, is another expression for a Bodhisattva? Subhuti, what do you think? Do you think that what is called a Bodhisattva is feeling, perception, formations, and that consciousness being emptiness, consciousness not being emptiness, consciousness having signs, consciousness not having signs, consciousness having aspirations, consciousness not having aspirations, is another expression for a Bodhisattva? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, it is not so. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, based on what reasoning do you maintain that what is called a Bodhisattva is not another expression for form being permanent, nor another expression for being impermanent? Likewise, what is called a Bodhisattva is not another expression for form being happiness and suffering, nor another expression for having a self, nor another expression for being without a self, nor another expression for being pacified, nor another expression for not being pacified, nor another expression for being emptiness, nor another expression for not being emptiness, nor another expression for having signs, nor another expression for not having signs, nor another expression for having aspirations, nor another expression for not having aspirations? Likewise, a Bodhisattva is not another expression for feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness being permanent, nor another expression for being impermanent, nor happiness and suffering, nor having a self and being without a self, nor being pacified and not being pacified, nor being emptiness and not being emptiness.
