Sixth, the Chapter on Subhuti. Sixth, the Chapter on Subhuti. Then, the Blessed One addressed the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, by all means, you should confidently preach the Dharma to the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, starting from the Perfection of Wisdom, so that they will definitely arise in the Perfection of Wisdom." Then, those Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, those great Shravakas, and those sons of gods thought to themselves: "Does the venerable Subhuti now preach the Perfection of Wisdom to the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas with his own wisdom and the power of increasing faith, or does he preach it by the power of the Buddha?" Thus they thought. Then, by the power of the Buddha, the venerable Subhuti, knowing with his mind the thoughts of those Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, those great Shravakas, and those sons of gods, said to the venerable Shariputra: "Venerable Shariputra, whatever the Shravakas of the Blessed One say, teach, or speak, all of that is the power of the Tathagata. Whatever Dharma is taught by the Tathagata, all of that is not contrary to the nature of Dharma. Those sons of good family, even if they learn the Dharma that is taught, will directly realize that nature of Dharma. Shariputra, the Tathagata himself teaches the Perfection of Wisdom to the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas in a skillful way. Venerable Shariputra, here, all the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas are not able to teach the Perfection of Wisdom, because it is not their domain." Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if we say Bodhisattva Mahasattva, what kind of Dharma is the term Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Blessed One, I have not truly seen the Dharma of the name called Bodhisattva, Blessed One.

Then, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and that Prajnaparamita, and even the name of Bodhisattva, I have not truly seen accordingly. So, to which Bodhisattva-Mahasattva shall I instruct the Prajnaparamita? And to whom shall I reveal it? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it is like this: Prajnaparamita, Bodhisattva, and the name of Bodhisattva are merely names. That name is not inside, not outside, and cannot be identified even without both. Subhuti, it is like this: For example, although beings are referred to as beings, no being can be identified. It is merely a designation, and for whatever is designated, only a conventional term is applied, but there is no birth or cessation. Similarly, self, life, the one who is born, the one who nourishes, the person, the individual, the one born of strength, the son of strength, the doer, the one who causes to do, the beggar, the one who begs completely, the feeler, the one who causes to feel, the knower, and the seer, all of these are designated phenomena. For whatever is designated, there is no birth or cessation. Thus, it is merely designated as a term by convention. That name is not inside, not outside, and cannot be identified even without both. Subhuti, similarly, whatever is Prajnaparamita, whatever is Bodhisattva, and whatever is the name of Bodhisattva, all of these are designated phenomena. For whatever is designated, there is no birth or cessation except for the designation of terms by convention. Subhuti, it is like this: For example, the inner body is called form, which is merely a designated phenomenon. For whatever is designated, there is no birth or cessation except for the designation of terms by convention. That name is not inside, not outside, and cannot be identified even without both. Similarly, feeling, perception, formations, and what is called consciousness are merely designated phenomena. For whatever is designated, only the name of

There is no arising and no ceasing, except for what is nominally designated as a term. That name does not exist internally, nor does it exist externally, nor is it perceived to exist apart from both. Subhuti, likewise, all those that are called Perfection of Wisdom, Bodhisattva, and the name of Bodhisattva are merely imputed dharmas. Whatever is an imputed dharma has no arising and no ceasing, except for what is nominally designated as a term. Subhuti, for example, what is called the eye is merely designated as a dharma. What is designated as a dharma has no arising and no ceasing, except for what is nominally designated as a term.
