These are the dharmas of the past. These are the dharmas with outflows. These are the dharmas without outflows. These are conditioned dharmas. These are unconditioned dharmas. These are common dharmas. These are uncommon dharmas. These are the dharmas of the Shravakas. These are the dharmas of the Pratyekabuddhas. These are the dharmas of the Bodhisattvas. These are the dharmas of the Buddhas. How should they be counted? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Are the characteristics of the absence of characteristics and the dharmas of the Shravakas different? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Are the characteristics of the absence of characteristics and the dharmas of the Pratyekabuddhas different? Are the characteristics of the absence of characteristics and the dharmas of the Bodhisattvas different? Are the characteristics of the absence of characteristics and the dharmas of the Buddhas different? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, the absence of characteristics itself is the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, Arhatship, self-awakening, the dharmas of the Bodhisattvas, the dharmas of the Buddhas. He replied: Blessed One, it is so. Sugata, it is so. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, therefore, all dharmas should be understood as without characteristics. Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who trains in this absence of characteristics of all dharmas increases with many virtuous dharmas, namely, the six perfections, emptiness of the interior up to the emptiness of the nature of non-things, the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four legs of magical power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, the noble eightfold path, the four noble truths, the four meditations, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, the nine sequential abidings, emptiness, absence of characteristics, and absence of wishes.
