If so, like this, he knows all dharmas as like illusions, sees, and realizes. He knows, sees, and realizes them as like emanations. He asks: Blessed One, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thus knows, sees, and realizes all dharmas as like illusions, and knows, sees, and realizes them as like emanations, then for what purpose does the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the six perfections? The four dhyanas, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, the five supernormal cognitions, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and the eighteen unshared dharmas of the Buddhas? For what reason does the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the path to enlightenment? To purify the Buddha-fields and to fully ripen all sentient beings. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if all sentient beings themselves knew all dharmas as like emanations, then the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva would not practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva for countless eons for the sake of all sentient beings. Subhuti, because all sentient beings themselves do not know all dharmas as like emanations, therefore the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the six perfections for countless eons. He fully ripens all sentient beings. He also purifies the Buddha-fields. Subhuti asks: Blessed One, if all dharmas are like dreams, like reflections, like mirages, like optical illusions, like illusions, like emanations, then, Blessed One, where do sentient beings abide? The Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom and causes sentient beings to ascend. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, sentient beings abide in the completely imputed, which is not truly name and sign. Therefore, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom and causes them to ascend from name and sign. He asks: Blessed

The Blessed One declared: "Subhuti, for example, a name or a sign is designated by a temporary name. For example, a name or a sign, or form, or feeling, or perception, or formation, or consciousness, or woman, or man, or boy, or girl, or sentient being in hell, or one born as an animal, or one in the realm of Yama, or god, or human, or conditioned dharma, or unconditioned dharma, or the fruit of stream-enterer, or the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, or Arhat, or solitary Buddha, or perfect complete enlightenment, these are designated by illusory names. Subhuti, all names are designated by the meaning of names, and all conditioned things to which ordinary people are attached are merely names. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita, with skillful means, he exhorts them, saying: 'All names arise from discrimination, so do not be attached to the non-things that are discriminated, which are empty of inherent existence.' Those who are skilled in the emptiness of all dharmas do not cling to appearances. Subhuti, therefore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices Prajnaparamita, with skillful means, he teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. Subhuti, what is a sign? These two are the signs to which ordinary people are attached. Which two? Namely, the sign of form and the sign of formlessness. Subhuti, what is the sign of form? Whether it is past, future, or present form, gross or subtle, good or bad, distant or near, whatever is apprehended by universal discrimination in an instant, this is called the sign of form. Subhuti, what is the sign of formlessness? Any formless dharma

Or it may be said that clinging to signs will completely discriminate and generate afflictions, which is called the sign of the formless. Therefore, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he skillfully liberates from those signs, places them in the realm of signlessness, and thoroughly subdues them. In any case, do not fall into the duality of "this is a sign" and "this is signless." Thus, place and subdue them. Subhuti, in this way, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he skillfully liberates beings from signs and well places them in the realm of signlessness. Question: World Honored One, if all these dharmas are just like that, just names and signs, just nominally established, just arising from nominal establishment, then, World Honored One, how can a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, obtain the excellence of virtuous dharmas, and how can he strive to enable others to obtain the excellence of virtuous dharmas, and with those roots of virtue, perfect stage by stage, and connect beings with the three vehicles? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, if there exists a thing or a sign of a thing, then, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he will not obtain excellence, nor will he strive to enable others to obtain excellence. Precisely because there is no sign of a thing, and there is no thing, therefore, Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he perfects the Perfection of Dhyana in a signless manner. In a signless manner, he perfects the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Morality, and the Perfection of Generosity. In a signless manner, he perfects the four Dhyanas, the four Immeasurables, and the four Formless Absorptions. In a signless manner, the four mindfulnesses

Tranquility, as well as truly abandoning, the feet of miraculous power, the faculties, the powers, the branches of enlightenment, and the eightfold noble path are all brought to perfection. In the manner of signlessness, the inner emptiness, the outer emptiness, and the inner and outer emptiness are all brought to perfection. In the manner of signlessness, the essence of the absence of things, up to emptiness itself, is brought to perfection. In the manner of signlessness, the eight liberations, the nine successive abidings of meditative absorption, the four noble truths, and the doors of liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness—are all brought to perfection. In the manner of signlessness, the superknowledges, the samādhis, and the dhāraṇī doors are all brought to perfection. In the manner of signlessness, the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love, great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are all brought to perfection. Having thus perfected these virtuous dharmas, one then combines them with other virtuous dharmas in the manner of signlessness. Subhūti, even if there were a sign as small as a portion placed on the tip of a hair, a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, would not realize complete and perfect enlightenment with dharmas that are signless, without memory, and without mental activity, nor would sentient beings rely on suchness and the uncontaminated dharmas. Subhūti, all uncontaminated dharmas are signless, without memory, and without mental activity. Subhūti, in this way, when a Bodhisattva Mahāsattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he benefits all sentient beings with uncontaminated dharmas. Petition: Blessed One, if all dharmas are thus without signs, without memory, and without mental activity, then, Blessed One, how is it that these are virtuous dharmas, these are non-virtuous dharmas, these are worldly dharmas, these are beyond worldly dharmas,
