Wisdom and so on, samādhis and so on, the doors of dhāraṇīs and so on, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a buddha are merely designations. Whatever is merely a designation is the nature of phenomena, and this is what the venerable Subhūti has taught as non-contradictory. Kauśika, why is that? Whatever is the nature of phenomena of all phenomena is non-contradictory, utterly non-contradictory. Whatever is non-contradictory, utterly non-contradictory, is what the venerable Subhūti has taught, and there is no contradiction. The fruit of stream-enterer, the fruit of once-returner, the fruit of non-returner, arhatship itself, and solitary awakening are merely designations. Whatever is merely a designation is the nature of phenomena, and this is what the venerable Subhūti has taught as non-contradictory. Kauśika, omniscience itself is merely a designation. Whatever is merely a designation is the nature of phenomena, and this is what the venerable Subhūti has taught as non-contradictory. Kauśika, a stream-enterer is merely a designation. Whatever is merely a designation is the nature of phenomena, and this is what the venerable Subhūti has taught as non-contradictory. Kauśika, a once-returner, a non-returner, an arhat, a solitary buddha, a bodhisattva, and a perfectly awakened buddha are merely designations. Kauśika, in that way, the venerable Subhūti neither contradicts designations nor teaches the nature of phenomena. Then the venerable Subhūti said this to the lord of the gods, Indra: Kauśika, it is just so, it is just so. The Blessed One has also taught that all phenomena are merely designations. Kauśika, a bodhisattva mahāsattva should also understand all phenomena as merely designations in that way, and should train in the perfection of wisdom. Kauśika, that bodhisattva mahāsattva

One does not learn feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the eye. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see what one is to learn, the feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the eye. One does not learn feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the ear, feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the nose, feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the tongue, feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the body, and feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the mind. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see what one is to learn, the feeling born from the contact of the gathering of the mind. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva learning in that way does not learn the earth element. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see the earth element that one is to learn. One does not learn water, fire, wind, space, and the element of consciousness. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see the element of consciousness that one is to learn. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva learning in that way does not learn ignorance. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see the ignorance that one is to learn. One does not learn formations, consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, and old age and death. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see the old age and death that one is to learn. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva learning in that way does not learn the perfection of giving. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see the perfection of giving that one is to learn. One does not learn the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom. Why is that? It is like this: one does not correctly see the perfection of wisdom that one is to learn. Bodhisattva
