Chapter Sixteen Chapter Sixteen Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, thought to himself: "If the venerable Subhūti thus pours down and teaches this rain of Dharma, then, in order for me to make offerings to this Prajñāpāramitā, I will manifest many flowers and scatter them upon the Blessed One Buddha, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas, the Sangha of monks, and the venerable Subhūti. I will manifestly scatter them, I will thoroughly scatter them." Thus he thought. Then, the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings in this threefold great thousand world realm, and as many gods as there are up to Akanishtha, also thought to themselves: "If the venerable Subhūti thus pours down and teaches this rain of Dharma, then, in order for us to make offerings to this Prajñāpāramitā, we will manifest many flowers and scatter them upon the Blessed One Buddhas, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas, the Sangha of monks, and the venerable Subhūti. We will manifestly scatter them, we will thoroughly scatter them." Thus they thought. Then, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, and all those gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings in the threefold great thousand world realm, and the gods up to Akanishtha, in order to make offerings to this Prajñāpāramitā, manifested many divine Mandārava flowers and scattered them upon the Blessed One Buddha, the Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas, the Sangha of monks, and the venerable Subhūti. They manifestly scattered them, they thoroughly scattered them. As soon as those flowers were scattered, the ground of this threefold great thousand world realm was covered with flowers, and even in the space above, houses of flowers were piled up. The entire threefold great thousand world realm was filled with splendor, joy, and delightful sights. Then, the venerable Subhūti thought to himself: "Thus, these flowers manifested and scattered by the gods, I have never before in all the abodes of the gods

Now, they are not seen to exist; these flowers are emanations. Like this, these flowers scattered by the sons of the gods are not born from gardens, not born from water, and not born from land. Like this, these flowers scattered by the sons of the gods are born from the mind, (they think) these flowers are not born from gardens. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, said this to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, these flowers are unborn; these flowers are not born from the mind, (they think) not born from gardens. Subhuti said: Kauśika, in that way, saying that these flowers are unborn and unproduced, that these flowers are not born from the mind, not born from gardens, Kauśika, what is unborn like that is not even a flower. Indra said: Venerable Subhuti, are these flowers merely unborn? Or is form also unborn? Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are also unborn? Subhuti said: Kauśika, these flowers are not only unborn, but Kauśika, form is also unborn; whatever is unborn is not form. Kauśika, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are also unborn; whatever is unborn is not consciousness. Kauśika, the eye is unborn; whatever is unborn is not the eye.
