Some devas among them thought thus: 'If the yakshas' yaksha words, yaksha language, yaksha sounds, and yaksha expressions are spoken, then it is understandable. But if the venerable Subhuti explains, speaks, shows, distinguishes, clarifies, and establishes the Perfection of Wisdom, then it is not understandable.' Then, the venerable Subhuti, knowing the thoughts of those devas completely with his mind, said to those devas: 'Devas, is what is spoken not understandable?' The devas said: 'Venerable Subhuti, it is not understandable.' Subhuti said: 'Devas, in this way, not even a single letter is spoken. Whatever is not spoken is not heard. Whatever is not heard is not understood. Why is that? The Perfection of Wisdom is not a letter, therefore, there is no one who teaches, listens, or understands it. Why is that? Devas, the enlightenment of the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones is without letters. Devas, for example, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One emanates an emanation, and the emanation also emanates the fourfold assembly of monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, and then the emanation teaches the Dharma to those fourfold assemblies of emanations. Devas, what do you think of that? Is there anyone in that assembly who teaches? Is there anyone who hears? Is there anyone who understands?' They said: 'Venerable Subhuti, there is not.' Subhuti said: 'Devas, likewise, all dharmas are like illusions, therefore, there is no one who teaches, no one who hears, and no one who understands. Devas, for example, if a person dreams while sleeping, and in the dream sees a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One teaching the Dharma, devas, what do you think of that? Is there teaching, hearing, or understanding there?'

Has it become...? Said: Venerable Subhuti, it is not. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like dreams, in which no one has indicated, no one has heard, and no one has known. Sons of the gods, for example, if two people dwell in a mountain valley, speaking of the virtues of the Buddha, and also speaking of the virtues of the Dharma and the Sangha, and from those two arises an echo, sons of the gods, what do you think of this? Does that single echo know the sound of the second echo? Said: Venerable Subhuti, that is not possible. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like echoes, in which no one has indicated, no one has heard, and no one has known. Sons of the gods, for example, a magician or a skilled disciple of a magician, at a crossroads on a great road, manifests a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly complete Buddha, and also manifests a fourfold assembly of monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, and he teaches the Dharma to the manifested fourfold assembly, sons of the gods, what do you think of this? Is there anyone who has indicated, heard, or known in it? Said: Venerable Subhuti, that is not possible. Subhuti said: Sons of the gods, likewise, all dharmas are like illusions, in which no one has indicated, no one has heard, and no one has known. Then, those sons of the gods thought thus: Alas, this venerable Subhuti is truly an elucidator! Alas, this noble Subhuti is truly elucidating the Prajnaparamita, yet he also proclaims what is deeper than the deepest, and enters into what is finer than the finest. Then, the venerable Subhuti, knowing fully with his mind the thoughts of those sons of the gods, said this to those sons of the gods: Sons of the gods, form is not deep, nor is it fine. Feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness are not deep, nor are they fine. Why is that? Because the nature of form is not deep.
