So! The noble truths, the dhyanas, the immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, the eight liberations and the nine successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness and wishlessness, the superknowledges and the samadhis, the doors of dharani, the ten powers of the Tathagata and the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha are empty of inherent existence. It neither abides within, nor does it abide without, nor is it perceived as being in between the two. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, up to the state of omniscience, is empty of inherent existence. It neither abides within, nor does it abide without, nor is it perceived as being in between the two. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, in this way, all phenomena do not exist because of their emptiness of inherent existence. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the six perfections, one should thus cultivate form. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness should also be cultivated. One should cultivate the sense bases, the elements, and dependent origination. One should cultivate the perfections, all emptiness, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the noble truths, the dhyanas, the immeasurables, and the formless absorptions, the eight liberations and the nine successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness and wishlessness, the superknowledges, the samadhis, the doors of dharani, the ten powers of the Tathagata and the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, great love and great compassion, and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha. One should cultivate up to the state of omniscience. Then, Venerable Sharadvatiputra said to Venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva

When practicing the six perfections, one is completely training in the path to enlightenment. Subhuti said: Venerable one, son of Sharadvati, the perfection of generosity is also worldly, and also beyond worldly. The perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom are also worldly, and also beyond worldly. Said, Venerable Subhuti, what is the worldly perfection of generosity, and what is the one beyond worldly? Subhuti said: Venerable one, son of Sharadvati, here the Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices generosity, becoming a lord of generosity, to renunciates, brahmins, the poor, the hungry, the thirsty, beggars, whoever desires food, he gives food and drink, vehicles and clothes, flowers and garlands, incense and ointment, dwellings and bedding, utensils and medicine, and any other human necessities. To those who desire a son, he gives a son; to those who desire a daughter, he gives a daughter; to those who desire a wife, he gives a wife; to those who desire a kingdom, he gives a kingdom; to those who desire a head, he gives a head; to those who desire limbs and twigs, he gives limbs and twigs. To those who desire flesh and blood and bones, he gives flesh and blood and bones. He abides and gives, and thinks thus: I am the giver, this is the receiver, this is the gift, I am without miserliness, I am the lord of generosity, I am giving away all possessions, I am acting according to the Buddha's teachings, I am practicing the perfection of generosity. Having said this, after giving, also in the manner of mindfulness, together with all sentient beings, he dedicates it to the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, and dedicates it thus: By this fruit of my generosity, may these sentient beings, in this very life, without attachment to obtaining happiness, be completely liberated from samsara. After completely dedicating in this way, he becomes attached to the three attachments, and gives that gift. What are the three? Like this, perceiving the existence of self

English

I am attached to the notion of myself as others and to the notion of giving, and thus completely relinquish giving. This is called the worldly perfection of generosity. Why is it called the worldly perfection of generosity? Because it does not waver, excel, or transcend from the world, therefore it is called the worldly perfection of generosity. What is the supramundane perfection of generosity? It is like this, the three spheres are completely pure. What is the complete purity of the three spheres? Sharadvatiputra, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva gives, he does not fixate on himself, does not fixate on the recipient, does not fixate on the giving, and does not rejoice in the ripening. Sharadvatiputra, this is the complete purity of the three spheres of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva completely gives, and gives that giving to all sentient beings, and without fixating on those sentient beings, dedicates it to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and does not truly see even a little bit of characteristics. Sharadvatiputra, this is called the supramundane perfection of generosity. Why is it called the supramundane perfection of generosity? Because it wavers, excels, and transcends from the world, therefore it is called the supramundane perfection of generosity. Sharadvatiputra, the perfection of discipline, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom are both worldly and supramundane. What is the worldly perfection of discipline? Sharadvatiputra, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva guards discipline, and guards it by abiding. He thinks like this: I guard discipline for the benefit of all sentient beings. This is discipline. I follow the Buddha's teachings.
