Chapter Thirteen Chapter Thirteen Then, the venerable Śāradvatīputra said to the venerable Subhūti: "Venerable Subhūti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, how does he fully understand these dharmas? Venerable Subhūti, what is a Bodhisattva? What is the Perfection of Wisdom? What is full investigation?" Having said this, the venerable Subhūti said to the venerable Śāradvatīputra: "Venerable Śāradvatīputra, for whatever reason one says 'Bodhisattva,' it is because sentient beings are the cause of enlightenment, therefore it is called Bodhisattva. That enlightenment also knows the aspects of all dharmas, but does not cling to those dharmas. What aspects of dharmas does it know? It knows the aspect of form, but does not cling to it. It also knows the aspects of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, but does not cling to them. It knows the aspects of the sense bases, elements, and dependent origination, but does not cling to them. It knows the aspects of the perfections, all emptinesses, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, but does not cling to them. It knows the aspects of the noble truths, meditations, immeasurables, formless absorptions, liberations, the successive abidings, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, superknowledges, samādhis, dhāraṇī gates, the ten powers of the Tathāgata, the fearlessnesses, the analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, but does not cling to them." Śāradvatīputra said: "Venerable Subhūti, what is the aspect of all dharmas?" Subhūti said: "Venerable Śāradvatīputra, by what aspect, what reason, what characteristic can dharmas be said to have an aspect? That is, how does one know conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or internal and external dharmas, and by what aspect, what reason, what characteristic do they have an aspect?"
