What need is there to even mention it? There is nothing needed. The Blessed One said: 'Subhuti, what do you think? Is there such a path that, by meditating on it, one neither completely turns into afflictions nor becomes completely purified?' He replied: 'Blessed One, that path does not exist.' Blessed One, even the image itself has no substance. Meditating on a path that neither completely turns into afflictions nor becomes completely purified, what need is there to even mention it? There is nothing needed. The Blessed One said: 'Subhuti, what do you think? If an echo arises from a dense forest, a mountain, a deep ravine, or a valley, what manifest action does that echo perform? And having performed a manifest action, do sentient beings go to hell, or to the realm of animals, or to the world of Yama, or become gods and humans? Does such a thing exist?' He replied: 'Blessed One, that does not exist. Blessed One, that echo itself has no substance. What manifest action could it perform? And having performed a manifest action, would sentient beings go to hell, or to the realm of animals, or to the world of Yama, or be born as gods and humans, or be born as gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings, or be born as the Thirty-three Gods, or be born as the Yama Gods, or be born as the Tushita Gods, or be born as the Nirmāṇarati Gods, or be born as the Paranirmita-vaśavartin Gods, or be born as the Brahma Gods, or be born as the Gods of Brahma's Retinue, or be born as the Great Brahma Gods, or be born as the Gods of Light, or be born as the Gods of Minor Light, or be born as the Gods of Immeasurable Light, or be born as the Gods of Radiant Light, or be born as the Gods of Virtue, or be born as the Gods of Minor Virtue, or be born as the Gods of Immeasurable Virtue, or be born as the Gods of Increasing Virtue, or be born as the Gods of Greatness, or be born as the Gods of Minor Greatness, or be born as the Gods of Immeasurable Greatness, or be born as the Gods of Great Fruit, or be born as the Gods of No Trouble, or be born as the Gods of No Heat, or be born as the Gods of Good Appearance, or be born as the Gods of Good Vision, or be born as the Gods of Akaniṣṭha, or be born as the Limit of Space.'
