or called a person, or called conditioned dharma, or called unconditioned dharma, or called the fruit of stream-enterer, or called the fruit of once-returner, or called the fruit of non-returner, or called Arhat, or called solitary Buddha, or called perfect complete enlightenment, these are all established by illusory names. Subhuti, all names are established by the meaning of names, all conditioned dharmas that ordinary people are attached to are just names. When Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice in Prajnaparamita, with skillful means, they know that all names are produced by discrimination, and you should not be attached to the discriminated non-things, self-empty nature! For all dharma emptiness, the wise will not be attached, so to persuade. Subhuti, therefore, when Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice in Prajnaparamita, with skillful means, they preach the Dharma to sentient beings. Subhuti, what is the characteristic? These two are the characteristics that ordinary people are attached to, what are the two? That is, the characteristic of form and the characteristic of formlessness. Subhuti, what is the characteristic of form? Whether it is the coarse, subtle, beautiful, ugly, distant, or near form that is born in the past, future, or present, it is all grasped by the moment-by-moment discrimination, this is called the characteristic of form. Subhuti, what is the characteristic of formlessness? No matter what kind of formless dharma, if it is discriminated by taking the form, it will produce afflictions, this is called the characteristic of formlessness. Therefore, when Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice in Prajnaparamita, with skillful means, they liberate from those characteristics, place them in the realm of no characteristics, and thoroughly subdue them, in any case, do not fall into the two sides of "this is a characteristic, this is no characteristic", so to place and subdue them. Subhuti, therefore, Bodhisattva

The great Bodhisattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, skillfully liberates sentient beings from characteristics and firmly establishes them in the realm of non-characteristics. Question: World Honored One, if all these dharmas are merely names, regarded as name and characteristic, merely provisional, arising from complete imputation, then, World Honored One, how can a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, attain the excellence of virtuous dharmas, and how can I strive to attain the excellence of other virtuous dharmas, and with those virtuous roots, perfect stage after stage, and connect sentient beings with the three vehicles? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, if an object or the characteristic of an object exists, then, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva, great Bodhisattva, when practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, will not attain excellence, nor will he strive to attain other excellence. However, because the characteristic of an object does not exist, and the object does not exist, therefore, Subhuti, therefore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, he perfects the Perfection of Dhyana in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Perfection of Diligence in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Perfection of Patience in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Perfection of Morality in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Perfection of Generosity in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Four Dhyanas in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Four Immeasurables in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Four Formless Absorptions in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Four Mindfulnesses in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Four Right Exertions in the manner of non-characteristics, he perfects the Four Legs of Miraculous Power.
