Become skilled in the range of the twelve letters! Through one letter, know all the nature of phenomena! Through two letters, know all the nature of phenomena! Through the forty-two letters, know all the nature of phenomena! Meditate on the gathering of the forty-two letters in one letter! Meditate on the gathering of one letter in the forty-two letters! Thus it is taught. Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is also skilled in one letter. He is skilled in the range of the forty-two letters. He is skilled in meditating on the gathering of the forty-two letters within one letter. He is skilled in meditating on the gathering of one letter within the forty-two letters. Having become skilled in manifesting letters in that way, gradually, he is also skilled in manifesting the absence of letters. Subhuti, for example, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One is skilled in Dharma and skilled in letters. Because he is skilled in Dharma and skilled in letters, even though he teaches the Dharma without letters through many letters, Subhuti, that Dharma is not separate from the aspect of letters. Subhuti, that is also a rare and wonderful Dharma of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, which is not shared by all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, if emptiness, which is beyond extremes and without beginning or end, is taken as the basis, and beings are also completely unobservable, Dharma is also unobservable, and the nature of Dharma is also unobservable, Bhagavan, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practice the Perfection of Wisdom, the Perfection of Meditation, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Discipline, the Perfection of Generosity, the four Dhyanas, the four Immeasurables, the four Formless Absorptions, and practice the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the fourteen emptinesses, and the emptiness of…

He abides in and practices concentration, signless concentration, and wishless concentration; he practices the eight liberations; he practices the nine successive abidings; the ten powers of the Tathagata; the four fearlessnesses; the four analytical knowledges; great love; great compassion; the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha; the thirty-two marks of a great being; and the eighty minor marks. Having abided in the six superknowledges born from maturation, he will teach the Dharma to sentient beings. In that, he does not focus on sentient beings, nor does he focus on the designation of sentient beings. Because he does not focus on sentient beings, he does not focus on form. Because he does not focus on sentient beings, he does not focus on feeling. Because he does not focus on sentient beings, he does not focus on perception. Because he does not focus on sentient beings, he does not focus on formation. Because he does not focus on sentient beings, he does not focus on consciousness.
