Venerable Lord, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abide in the Perfection of Wisdom and uphold the Perfection of Diligence? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the Perfection of Wisdom, abides in the four bases of miraculous power, and with skillful means, generates diligence of body and mind, and goes to one Buddha-field, a hundred Buddha-fields, a thousand Buddha-fields, a hundred thousand Buddha-fields, a koti Buddha-fields, a hundred koti Buddha-fields, a thousand koti Buddha-fields, a hundred thousand koti Buddha-fields, a koti nayuta hundred thousand Buddha-fields, and teaches the Dharma to sentient beings, and establishes them in the Perfection of Giving, establishes them in the Perfection of Morality, establishes them in the Perfection of Patience, establishes them in the Perfection of Diligence, establishes them in the Perfection of Meditation, establishes them in the Perfection of Wisdom, establishes them in all the factors of enlightenment, establishes them in the fruit of Stream-enterer, establishes them in the fruit of Once-returner, establishes them in the fruit of Non-returner, establishes them in the state of Arhat, establishes them in Solitary Enlightenment, establishes them in Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment.

Abiding in the perfection of wisdom, apart from the samadhi of the Thus-gone One, whether it be the samadhi of a Hearer, or the samadhi of a Solitary Buddha, or even the samadhi of a Bodhisattva, he enters into all those samadhis, abides in those samadhis, and enters into and arises from the eight liberations in accordance with the proper order and not in accordance with the proper order. What are the eight? Subhuti, here a Bodhisattva, a great being, sees forms with a body that has form; this is the first liberation. Since he is endowed with the idea of no form internally, he sees external forms; this is the second liberation. He is intent on what is beautiful; this is the third liberation. He completely transcends all ideas of form, ideas of resistance have ceased, he does not attend to various ideas, thinking 'space is endless,' he dwells having attained proximity to the sphere of endless space; this is the fourth liberation. He completely transcends the sphere of endless space, thinking 'consciousness is endless,' he dwells having attained proximity to the sphere of endless consciousness; this is the fifth liberation. He completely transcends the sphere of endless consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing at all,' he dwells having attained proximity to the sphere of nothingness; this is the sixth liberation. He completely transcends the sphere of nothingness, he dwells having attained proximity to the sphere of neither idea nor non-idea; this is the seventh liberation. He completely transcends the sphere of neither idea nor non-idea, he dwells having attained proximity to the cessation of idea and feeling; this is the eighth liberation. Thus, he enters into and arises from these eight liberations in accordance with the proper order and not in accordance with the proper order. He enters into and arises from the nine successive abidings in accordance with the proper order and not in accordance with the proper order. What are the nine? Subhuti, here a Bodhisattva

O, brave one of the earth, having distanced himself from desires, distanced from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing initial application and sustained application, with joy and happiness born of seclusion, he draws near and dwells in the first dhyana. With the subsiding of initial application and sustained application, with inner tranquility, the stream of his mind becomes one, without initial application, without sustained application, with joy and happiness born of concentration, he draws near and dwells in the second dhyana. Having become detached from joy, he dwells in equanimity, mindful and with awareness, experiencing happiness with the body, the noble ones declare, 'The mindful one, experiencing happiness, is equanimous.' He draws near and dwells in the third dhyana, which is without joy. Having abandoned happiness and also abandoned suffering, with the previous mental happiness and unhappiness also having ceased, neither happiness nor suffering exists, with purity of equanimity and mindfulness, he draws near and dwells in the fourth dhyana. He completely transcends all perceptions of form, the perceptions of resistance have ceased, and not attending to various perceptions, thinking 'space is infinite,' he draws near and dwells in the sphere of infinite space. He completely transcends the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' he draws near and dwells in the sphere of infinite consciousness. He completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing at all,' he draws near and dwells in the sphere of nothingness. He completely transcends the sphere of nothingness, he draws near and dwells in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. He completely transcends the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, he draws near and dwells in the cessation of perception and feeling. Thus, he enters into and arises from these nine successive meditative states in accordance with the proper order and in ways that are both in accordance with and not in accordance with the established order. These are the eight liberations and the successive meditative states.
