Having distinguished those nine successive stages, one enters into the Samadhi of the Lion's Arising. Remaining in that Samadhi, one individually discerns the twelve links of dependent origination in accordance with the principles, and in discordance with the principles. What are the twelve links? Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva individually discerns that with ignorance as a condition, there is action. With action as a condition, there is consciousness, thus individually discerning. With consciousness as a condition, there is name and form, thus individually discerning. With name and form as a condition, there are the six sense sources, thus individually discerning. With the six sense sources as a condition, there is contact, thus individually discerning. With contact as a condition, there is feeling, thus individually discerning. With feeling as a condition, there is craving, thus individually discerning. With craving as a condition, there is grasping, thus individually discerning. With grasping as a condition, there is becoming, thus individually discerning. With becoming as a condition, there is birth, thus individually discerning. With birth as a condition, there is aging and death, thus individually discerning. With aging and death as a condition, there is sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation, thus individually discerning. In this way, this entire great mass of suffering arises in the world, thus individually discerning. If there is no aging and death, then sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, agitation, and the entire great mass of suffering do not arise, thus individually discerning. If there is no birth, then aging and death do not arise, thus individually discerning. If there is no becoming, then birth does not arise, thus individually discerning. If there is no grasping, then becoming does not arise, thus individually discerning. If there is no craving, then grasping does not arise, thus individually discerning. If there is no feeling, then craving does not arise, thus individually discerning. If there is no contact, then feeling does not arise, thus individually discerning. If there are no six sense sources, then contact does not arise, thus individually discerning. If there is no name and form, then the six sense sources do not arise, thus individually discerning.

If there is no consciousness, name and form will not arise, thus individually contemplating. If there is no formation, consciousness will not arise, thus individually contemplating. If there is no ignorance, formation will not arise, thus individually contemplating, and in this way, this great mass of suffering will cease, thus individually contemplating. In this way, individually contemplating the conformity and non-conformity of the twelve links of dependent origination, and also making the root of virtue common with all sentient beings, dedicating it to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. And how is it dedicated? It is dedicated in such a way that the thought of what to dedicate, how to dedicate, and to what to dedicate does not arise. Subhuti, in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of wisdom, completely upholds the perfection of meditation. Subhuti, what is the lion's swift samadhi of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, secluded from desire, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, with initial and sustained thought, from the joy and happiness born of seclusion, approaches and abides in the first dhyana. Rising from the first dhyana, he enters the second dhyana. Rising from the second dhyana, he enters the third dhyana. Rising from the third dhyana, he enters the fourth dhyana. Rising from the fourth dhyana, he enters the sphere of infinite space. Rising from the sphere of infinite space, he enters the sphere of infinite consciousness. Rising from the sphere of infinite consciousness, he enters the sphere of nothingness. Rising from the sphere of nothingness, he enters the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Rising from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, he enters cessation. Rising from the absorption of cessation, he enters the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception.
