The Second Chapter, The Chapter of the Inexhaustible, Part Two. The Second Chapter, The Chapter of the Inexhaustible, Part Two. The Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom, Volume Eleven, Chapter One. Question: World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide in the Perfection of Dhyana and fully uphold the Perfection of Giving? The World Honored One said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, secluded from desires, secluded from evil, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, possessing initial application and sustained application, with joy and happiness born of seclusion, approaches and abides in the first dhyana. When initial application and sustained application are pacified, the inner being is completely purified, the stream of mind becomes one, without initial application, without sustained application, with joy and happiness born of samadhi, approaches and abides in the second dhyana. He is detached from desire from joy, possessing mindfulness, maintaining awareness, abiding in equanimity, the body experiences happiness, the noble ones call it possessing mindfulness, observing happiness, maintaining a state of equanimity, approaches and abides in the third dhyana without joy. He abandons happiness, and also abandons suffering, and the previous mental pleasure and displeasure have also disappeared, there is neither happiness nor suffering, completely purified through equanimity and mindfulness, approaches and abides in the fourth dhyana. He completely transcends all perceptions of form, all perceptions of obstruction have disappeared, no longer paying attention to various kinds of thoughts, thinking that space is infinite, approaches and abides in the sphere of infinite space. He completely transcends all spheres of infinite space, thinking that consciousness is infinite, approaches and abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness. He completely transcends all spheres of infinite consciousness, thinking that there is nothing at all, approaches and abides in the sphere of nothingness. He completely transcends all spheres of nothingness, approaches and abides in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception.

Having accomplished and abided. Having abided in that perfection of meditation, with an undistracted mind, he completely gives material gifts and Dharma gifts to those beings. Moreover, he speaks of the benefits of those who completely give material gifts and Dharma gifts, and makes them happy with harmony. Those roots of virtue are not dedicated to the ground of the Hearers or the Solitary Buddhas, but are made common with all sentient beings and dedicated to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of meditation, completely upholds the perfection of giving.
