Thus it is practiced. Subhuti, I grant such an aspect of solitude to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and ask the evil Mara, Practice in solitude, forests, and remote places, thus showing solitude. That solitude becomes noisy, and because it is mixed with the mental activity of those with the grounds of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, it is not diligent in the Perfection of Wisdom, nor will it perfect all-knowingness. Because it practices in that way, practicing and not completely purifying the mental activity, other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas practice near villages, and possess completely pure mental activity, not mixed with the mind of Hearers, not mixed with the mind of Solitary Buddhas, not mixed with other sinful minds that are not pure, they generate a mind of contempt for those who have perfected meditation, liberation, samadhi, absorption, and supernormal powers. Therefore, the Bodhisattva who is unskilled in means is superior to dwelling in a solitary place with snakes, deer, birds, thieves, and madmen, with ferocious beasts with teeth and wandering Rakshasas, about a hundred yojanas high, for a year or a hundred years or a thousand years or a hundred thousand years, a crore of years or a hundred crores of years or a thousand crores of years or a hundred thousand crores of years, or a crore nayuta hundred thousand years, even if they stay for an even longer time, they will not know by what solitude the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva can truly abide in the heightened intention and practice in such a way. That Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will practice by mixing with many mental activities possessed by Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, they do not truly cherish solitude, they abide and are attached and manifestly attached to solitude, by this alone my mind does not rejoice, because they do not possess the solitude that I have spoken of for the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, therefore they do not abide in that solitude. Why is that? That is because it is separated from this solitude.

That is why. Thus, the evil Mara approached him and stayed in the space above, saying: "Good son, well done, well done! This is the correct solitary place taught by the Thus-Gone One. You should practice in this place with solitude. By doing so, you will quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Therefore, he cherished that solitary place even more. Then, he came to the vicinity of the village and disparaged the monks, Bodhisattva-vehicle practitioners who had pure minds and intentions, who possessed virtuous qualities, and who were long-lived, saying: "These people practice in a noisy manner." He criticized those great Bodhisattvas who practiced in solitude, accusing them of practicing in a noisy manner and accusing them of practicing in a mixed manner, thereby generating a contemptuous attitude. Towards those who practiced in a noisy manner, he considered them to be practicing in solitude and made offerings to them. Towards those who should be offered to, he generated pride. Why is that? Because I am encouraged by non-humans, I am reminded by non-humans. The practice that I practice is the correct practice. Who would encourage those who practice near the village? Who would remind those who practice near the village?" He generated pride. Thus, that Bodhisattva slandered other Bodhisattva-vehicle practitioners. Good son, that person should be known as a degraded Bodhisattva, should be known as a slanderer of Bodhisattvas, should be known as an illusion of a Bodhisattva. He is a thief of the world including gods, humans, and asuras. He is known by the world including gods, humans, and asuras as a thief with the appearance of a renunciate. A person with such behavior should not be approached, relied upon, or offered to by sons or daughters of good families of the Bodhisattva-vehicle.
