well established in this path, well established in the four dhyanas, well established in the four immeasurables, well established in the four formless absorptions, well established in the five superknowledges, well established in the fruit of stream-entry, well established in the fruit of once-returning, well established in the fruit of non-returning, well established in the state of an arhat, well established in self-awakening, well established in unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening. If that root of virtue is also dedicated to unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening, what do you think, Subhuti? Does the merit of that son or daughter of good family increase greatly because of that cause? He replied: Blessed One, it increases greatly. Sugata, it increases greatly. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, even more than that, if a son or daughter of good family teaches, explains, opens up, elaborates, interprets, distinguishes, clarifies, and correctly shows this Perfection of Wisdom to others, their merit will increase even more. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in this way, with a mind endowed with all-knowingness, who makes the thought, goes to the place of giving for all sentient beings. Why is that? Because, other than the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, no sentient being has such a practice of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Why is that? Because, when those sons of good family practice the Perfection of Wisdom, they manifest great love. When they practice the Perfection of Wisdom, they see all sentient beings as if they are about to be killed, and they attain great compassion. By that practice, by practicing, they rejoice, greatly rejoice, and manifest joy. They manifest great joy. They do not abide together with that sign, and they attain great equanimity. Subhuti, that is a Bodhi-

The great light of wisdom of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas is like this: it is the light of the Perfection of Giving. It is the light of the Perfection of Morality. It is the light of the Perfection of Patience. It is the light of the Perfection of Diligence. It is the light of the Perfection of Meditation. It is the light of the Perfection of Wisdom. Sons of good family, even though they have not manifestly attained complete perfect enlightenment, they become the object of giving for all sentient beings, and they do not turn back from the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Because they practice with the attention that is in accordance with the Perfection of Wisdom, the giving of clothes, alms, bedding, medicine, and possessions for use by anyone, and the giving of the patrons becomes pure, and they also become closer to all-knowingness. Subhuti, therefore, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva wishes to meaningfully partake of alms in the realm, wishes to show the path to all sentient beings, wishes for great light to arise, wishes to liberate sentient beings dwelling in the prison of the three realms, and wishes to generate the eye of unsurpassed wisdom for sentient beings, then he should constantly and uninterruptedly abide with the attention that is in accordance with the Perfection of Wisdom. If a Bodhisattva- Mahasattva does not practice with the attention that is in accordance with the Perfection of Wisdom, he should not give opportunity to other attentions. He should by all means abide day and night without懈怠and diligently with the attention that is in accordance with the Perfection of Wisdom, and should act in that way. Subhuti, for example, in the past there was a man who had never obtained a precious jewel, and at another time he happened to obtain a precious jewel. Because he obtained that precious jewel, he became filled with joy, elation, and pleasure. However, if he lost that precious jewel immediately after obtaining it, then he would experience suffering and great displeasure because of that.

Therefore, always constantly thinking, I have lost that lovely jewel, and the mind is always thinking of possessing the jewel. Subhuti, similarly, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should think, 'This is a jewel!' and should not be separated from the mental activity associated with all-knowingness. One should also not lose the jewel of all-knowingness, so that one can always possess happiness and much inner happiness. Question: World Honored One, all those mental activities are devoid of inherent existence, and all mental activities are empty in their inherent nature. How can a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva not be separated from the mental activity associated with all-knowingness? Because in separation, a Bodhisattva is unattainable, mental activity is unattainable, and all-knowingness is also unattainable. The World Honored One said: Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva Maha-sattva understands that all dharmas are devoid of inherent existence, and they are not made by Sravakas, not made by Pratyekabuddhas, nor made by the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, but are the Dharma-nature of dharmas, the abiding nature of dharmas, the faultless nature of dharmas, Suchness, non-inverted Suchness, non-different Suchness, the Dharma-realm, and the boundary of these equal to space. If one understands this, then that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is not separated from Prajnaparamita. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because Prajnaparamita is tranquil in its inherent nature, and empty in its inherent nature. It has no increase, and no decrease. Question: World Honored One, if Prajnaparamita is tranquil in its inherent nature and empty in its inherent nature, then, World Honored One, how can a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva correctly arise in Prajnaparamita and attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment? The World Honored One said: Subhuti,
