I am unborn. Great love is also unborn. Great compassion is also unborn. The eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha are also unborn. The knowledge of all things is also unborn. The knowledge of the aspects of the path is also unborn. The knowledge of all aspects is also unborn. Ordinary beings are also unborn. The dharma of ordinary beings is also unborn. Stream-enterers are also unborn. The dharma of stream-enterers is also unborn. Once-returners are also unborn. The dharma of once-returners is also unborn. Non-returners are also unborn. The dharma of non-returners is also unborn. Arhats are also unborn. The dharma of Arhats is also unborn. Pratyekabuddhas are also unborn. The dharma of Pratyekabuddhas is also unborn. Bodhisattvas are also unborn. The dharma of Bodhisattvas is also unborn. Buddhas are also unborn. If the dharma of Buddhas is also unborn, then the practitioners of the Hearer Vehicle will also attain the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, and the state of Arhatship. The practitioners of the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle will also attain the Bodhi of Pratyekabuddhas. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will also attain the knowledge of all aspects. The five types of beings will also become different. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas will also attain the five types of Bodhi. Venerable Subhuti, if all dharmas are unborn, why is it that stream-enterers cultivate the path in order to abandon the three fetters? Once-returners cultivate the path in order to weaken desire, hatred, and delusion. Non-returners cultivate the path in order to abandon the five lower fetters. Arhats cultivate the path in order to abandon all the higher fetters. Those who enter the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle cultivate the path for the sake of their own Bodhi. Why is it that Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas do so for the sake of sentient beings?

Experiencing suffering and practicing austerities. Why? Because the Tathagata has awakened to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Why? Because the Tathagata has turned the wheel of Dharma. Having said this, the venerable Rava Jyor said these words to the venerable Sharadvati's son. Venerable Sharadvati's son, I do not wish that the unborn should attain and realize the Dharma. I do not wish that the unborn should enter the stream. I do not wish for the fruit of stream-entry. I do not wish that the unborn should return once. I do not wish for the fruit of once-returning. I do not wish that the unborn should not return. I do not wish for the fruit of non-returning. I do not wish that the unborn should become an Arhat. I do not wish to realize the state of Arhat. I do not wish that the unborn should become a Pratyekabuddha. I do not wish for self-enlightenment. Venerable Sharadvati's son, I also do not wish that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should practice austerities. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva also does not practice with the notion of practicing austerities. Why is that? Venerable Sharadvati's son, if the notion of suffering arises, one cannot work for the benefit of countless sentient beings. Venerable Sharadvati's son, by generating the notion of mother, the notion of sister, the notion of daughter, and the notion of self towards sentient beings, one can work for the benefit of countless sentient beings in an imperceptible way. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the mind in this way: just as the word "I" is everything in everything, everything in every way, neither existing nor being apparent. Similarly, one also generates notions towards external phenomena of self. Even generating notions in this way, one does not generate the notion of austerity. Why is that? Because in this way, one does not grasp or perceive any Dharma. Venerable
