One should apply the mind in this way. The eight liberations, what are the eight? One with form sees forms, this is the first liberation. One with the perception of no form sees external forms, this is the second liberation. To be inclined to what is beautiful, this is the third liberation. He, having completely transcended the perception of form in every way, the perceptions of resistance having ceased, and not applying the mind to various perceptions, [thinking] 'space is infinite,' he, having closely cultivated the sphere of infinite space, this is the fourth liberation. He, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space in every way, [thinking] 'consciousness is infinite,' he, having closely cultivated the sphere of infinite consciousness, this is the fifth liberation. He, having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness in every way, [thinking] 'there is nothing at all,' he, abiding having closely cultivated the sphere of nothingness, this is the sixth liberation. He, having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness in every way, he, abiding having closely cultivated the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, this is the seventh liberation. He, having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception in every way, he, abiding having closely cultivated the cessation of perception and feeling, this is the eighth liberation. These are the eight liberations. And the nine successive abidings of meditative absorption. What are the nine? For example, he is secluded from desire, secluded from unwholesome and unvirtuous dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, with joy and pleasure born of seclusion, he closely cultivates and abides in the first dhyana. He, with the cessation of initial application and sustained application, with inner purity, the mind becoming one-pointed, without initial application, without sustained application, with joy and pleasure born of concentration, he closely cultivates and abides in the second dhyana. He, being without attachment from joy, abides in equanimity with mindfulness and awareness, experiencing pleasure with the body, which the noble ones declare

and possesses equanimity that discerns happiness. As it is said, he approaches and abides in the third dhyana, which is without joy. He abandons happiness and also abandons suffering. Since the happiness and unhappiness in his mind have previously vanished, there is neither happiness nor suffering. With equanimity and mindfulness, he approaches and abides in the fourth dhyana, which is completely pure. In every way, he completely transcends the perception of form. Since perceptions of obstruction have vanished and he does not contemplate various perceptions, he thinks, 'Space is infinite.' He approaches and abides in the sphere of infinite space. In every way, he completely transcends the sphere of infinite space, thinking, 'Consciousness is infinite.' He approaches and abides in the sphere of infinite consciousness. In every way, he completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking, 'There is nothing at all.' He approaches and abides in the sphere of nothingness. In every way, he completely transcends the sphere of nothingness, approaching and abiding in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. In every way, he completely transcends the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, approaching and abiding in the cessation of perception and feeling. Thus, these nine meditative absorptions that are gradually approached and abided in, as well as the emptiness of internality, the emptiness of externality, the emptiness of both internality and externality, the emptiness of emptiness, the great emptiness, the emptiness of ultimate reality, the emptiness of conditioned phenomena, the emptiness of unconditioned phenomena, the emptiness that transcends extremes, the emptiness of beginninglessness and endlessness, the emptiness of abandonment, the emptiness of inherent nature, the emptiness of all phenomena, the emptiness of self-characteristic, the emptiness of non-apprehension, the emptiness of non-entity, the emptiness of essential nature, the emptiness of non-entity of essential nature, the ten powers of the Tathagata, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha, etc.
