Is it permissible to be together on one mat? Upali said that it is not permissible, but if such a circumstance arises, it is allowed. Similarly, it is not permissible on one seat, or one bed, or one small bed, or one cloth, but if such a circumstance arises, it is allowed. Is it permissible for monks and laypeople to be together on a platform covered with mats? It is not permissible, but if such a circumstance arises, it is allowed. Even if cloths are spread, it is not permissible, but if such a circumstance arises, spreading cloths is the same. Similarly, a novice monk and a new monk, until they dwell separately, similarly, until the fault of dwelling arises, if they dwell together, they will incur a transgression. Is it permissible for two monks who are giving precepts to be together on one mat? Upali said that it is not permissible. The fifth verse of the "Solitary Three Doors Sutra." The "Vinaya Scripture of the Sacred Dharma," volume forty-two. In brief, one should not disturb and one small bed. Being busy is also the same. Being slightly busy, grass and trees also belong to the Sangha. When the Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti, the monks were sitting on small beds doing sewing work, and the group of six monks were also dwelling there and causing obstruction. They were disturbed while busy, and they were obstructed. When this happened, the monks reported to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan spoke: Monks, do not disturb the monks who are doing sewing work and are busy. If you disturb them, you will incur a transgression. The origin of the matter is in Shravasti. When the monks were eating, the group of six monks said to act like elders and disturbed them. The monks were unable to rise, and the Bhagavan spoke: Sit like elders. The Bhagavan spoke to sit like elders. Later, the group of six monks came and disturbed the earlier monks who were eating and busy. The Bhagavan spoke: A monk should not...

Those lands that are occupied, do not demand them, they should be placed separately. If you demand, it is a transgression. The Venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: "Venerable, to what extent are monks called to occupy food?" The Bhagavan declared: "Even if a small amount of salt, ginger, or radish is distributed, it is considered occupied." The Bhagavan declared: "Do not demand from monks who occupy food." The group of six monks, relying on their seniority, sat down first and deliberately occupied food. The Bhagavan declared: "Monks, do not sit out of order and occupy food. If you do so, it is a transgression. Monks, you should be skilled in the order of seating. Otherwise, it is a transgression." Monks took the Sangha's dyeing pots and basins and did the dyeing work. The group of six monks said, "We are senior, we have priority." Then they forcibly took the dye. The monks were occupied, so the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan declared: "Monks, do not demand pots or basins, you should leave after completing the things that need to be done." The Bhagavan declared: "Do not demand from monks who occupy pots or basins." The group of six monks deliberately occupied the vessels with a small amount of dye and then placed them. The Bhagavan declared: "Pour all the dye into one vessel, and take it when needed. Monks, you should occupy the vessels with a small amount of dye, do not place them. If you place them, it is a transgression." The origin of the story is that in Shravasti, Anathapindika surrounded Jeta Grove with trees. Laypeople cut down and took away the trees. The Bhagavan declared: "They should be dissuaded from cutting down." After they were dissuaded, they even threw away the trees and grass. Those things were wasted. The Bhagavan declared: "Things that cannot be used should be piled up in the garbage heap. The remaining things should be used for new work."
