It was said: "Venerable one, your teacher is compassionate, so he will not allow eating ghost food." Having done so, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Since that is the case, then allow them to drink sour gruel." The monks did not know how to drink sour gruel. Having done so, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: "Monks, there are five kinds of sour gruel. What are the five? They are: what is left over from fruit wine, what is left over from grain wine, whey water, whey, and gruel. Among them, what is left over from fruit wine is what is made from various fruits and has become spoiled and sour. What is left over from grain wine is what is mixed from various grains and has become spoiled and sour. Whey water is the water that comes from whey. Whey is whey that has become like whey water. Gruel is gruel itself. Mix these things with water, filter them through a cloth, and when they become like the color of an arrow shaft, then monks who are sick or not sick, in season or out of season, may drink them without hesitation." The story took place in Shravasti. At that time, another monk was afflicted with an anal boil. He cut the boil with his fingernails, and it became even more painful, rough, hot, harmful, and sore. He was tormented by the pain and thought: "The Blessed One has not considered my suffering and distress." Then, the Blessed One, moved by great compassion, went to his dwelling and asked: "Monk, what is wrong?" He felt sorrow and displeasure, his eyes filled with tears, his mouth filled with saliva, and he reported the details of what had happened to the Blessed One with difficulty. The Blessed One said: "Monks, did I not say before not to cut the anal boil?" The Blessed One did say so. "Then why did you do it?" "Blessed One, it was to relieve the pain." Then, the Blessed One said to the monks:
