That which is given is not given to one person, nor to two or many, nor is it given to another sangha, then it is given according to the Dharma. It is taken according to the Dharma. It is used properly. Furthermore, the sangha of the Buddha's disciples is divided, dwelling in various directions and non-directions, giving to one direction, not giving to another, then it is given according to the Dharma, taken according to the Dharma, and used properly. Monks, the king owns the land, the master owns the bed, the monk owns the bowl and the Dharma robe. The giver and the owner of the gift, with regard to the things they have given, have no reason to alter them again, nor should they give them to others. Why is that? Monks, giving is a prior act, not a later act. Therefore, return the monastery to the one who holds the sound. Monks, if someone gives what has been given to another, unless there is a special circumstance, it will become invalid. Monks, the monastery should also be returned to the venerable one who holds the sound. The Vinaya Dharma, Volume Thirty-two. The origin of the story is that when the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, the Blessed One said, "Hold the fifth year, the sixth year, the monastery festival, and the great festival." The Brahmins and householders also did likewise. There, monks dwelling in various places also gathered, and Brahmins and faithful householders gave them much food. They ate a little and gave the remainder to the novice monks. The next day, the novice monks gave the same food to those monks. The monks asked the novice monks, "Where did this food of yours come from?" They replied, "It is the same that you gave us yesterday." The monks said, "We gave this to you." Then they became doubtful and refused to accept it. The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One taught: If there is still expectation, he has given it, if there is still expectation, he eats it again, if they have given it, then it is an act of wrongdoing, if he eats it, then it is a downfall. Even though there is expectation, if he does not expect giving and eats again, then it is a fault when they give. If he eats, there is no fault. If he does not expect, but expects giving and eats, then there is no fault when they give, but if he eats, it is a downfall. If he does not expect, and does not expect giving and eats, then there is no fault when they give, and there is no fault when he eats.
