Bhikshu, if a bhikshu embraces a mad bhikshuni and goes together to a place, what will happen? It becomes an offense. Similarly, embracing and going together on the road with those who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by disease, foolish, mute, deaf, blind, sleeping, drunk, intoxicated, in meditative absorption, and likewise those who are in other states, all of these will constitute an offense. Bhikshu, if one who has received the precepts embraces a bhikshuni and goes together to a place, what will happen? It is a root downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu embraces a shramanerika or a shikshamana and goes together to a place, what will happen? It becomes an offense. Bhikshu, if a bhikshuni embraces a bhikshu, a shramana, or laypeople and goes together to a place, what will happen? It becomes an offense. Embracing and going together with shramanerikas, shikshamanas, and shramanas, what will happen? It becomes an offense. Just as with walking on the road, one should also understand the situation of crossing a river by boat. Except for miraculous powers or going by another route, the remaining situations should be explained in detail as before. In short: the mad and the mentally disturbed, the sick, the deaf, the foolish, the sleeping, the drunk, the intoxicated, those in meditative absorption, and those in other states. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: Bhikshu, the Bhagavan has said that if any bhikshu is alone with a woman in a secluded place, it will be a root downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu is alone with a mad person in a secluded place, what will happen? It becomes an offense. Similarly, being alone in a secluded place with those who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by disease, foolish, mute, deaf, blind, sleeping, drunk, intoxicated, in meditative absorption, and likewise those who are in other states, what will happen? It becomes an offense. In short: young women and the sky, mantras and night and a fourth person, as well as eunuchs, so too are secluded places.
