Bhikshu, if a bhikshu drives a stake into the ground, what happens? It is a downfall. Bhikshu, if it is pulled out, what happens? It is a transgression. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu peels off the topsoil, what happens? It is a transgression. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu digs in the ground, what happens? It is a transgression. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu digs up cow dung or broken tiles from the ground, what happens? It is a transgression. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu carves words, what happens? It is a transgression. Bhikshu, when precepts are given, if I dig the ground with my fingernails or give land, what happens? It is a downfall. The venerable Upāli asked the Blessed One Buddha: Bhikshu, the Blessed One said that if a bhikshu is invited as a guest for four months, he should accept it himself, and if he accepts more than that, it will be a downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu asks for more than the time and amount he was invited for through a messenger, what happens? It is a transgression. Similarly, letters and gestures, what others say, and if one asks and eats by passing it from one to another, all of them will be transgressions. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu is invited by a madman, and he asks for more than that limit and eats, what happens? It is a transgression. Similarly, a mentally disturbed person, one afflicted by illness, a fool, a mute, a deaf person, a sleeping person, a drunk person, an intoxicated person, one who has entered samadhi, and a traveler residing elsewhere.
