Venerable, if a monk sends clothes through a bhikkhuni and uses them without borrowing, what will happen? He commits a single offense. Similarly, if clothes are given through letters and, gestures and, others saying and, passed from one to one and used without being returned, all will commit a single offense. Venerable, if a monk gives clothes to a mad monk and uses them without borrowing, what will happen? He commits a single offense. Similarly, giving clothes to a monk who is mentally disturbed and, afflicted by illness and, foolish and, dumb and, deaf and, sleeping and, drunk and, unconscious and, in samadhi and, going to another place, and using them without returning them, all will commit a single offense. In short, unlawful and likewise mantras, small and large and clothes and, householders and those, named and fourth, seventh and, others' property and others and, giving precepts and bhikkhunis too. Venerable, is there a case where a monk gives clothes to a monk and uses them without borrowing, and there is no fault and no downfall? Upali, there is. Similarly, if one gives clothes to one's father and mother, and to one who has killed an arhat, or with malicious intent draws blood from a Tathagata, or to a heretic, or one who has become a heretic, or a thief's dwelling, or one who does not dwell, or one who dwells separately, or one who has previously committed a transgression, or those who have previously quarreled, and uses them without despising them, all will be transgressions. Bhikshus, if a bhikshu causes dissension in the sangha, or is close to dissension, or gives clothes to a bhikshu who has been admonished, and uses them without borrowing them back, what happens? One commits an offense. Bhikshus, if a bhikshu gives clothes to a bhikshuni, a sikshamana, a shramanerika, or a shramanera, and uses them without borrowing them back, what happens? One commits a transgression.
