Venerable, if a nun sleeps with a man in the same room, what happens? It is an offense leading to downfall. For novice nuns, female trainees, and novices, it is an offense. In short, letters, correspondence, gestures, what others say, and from one to another, madmen, the mentally disturbed, the sick, the deaf, the foolish, those who are asleep, those who are drunk, those who are intoxicated, those who are in meditative absorption, and those who are walking are also the same. The venerable Upali asked the Blessed One, the Buddha: Venerable, does the Blessed One also threaten monks? If threatened, it becomes an offense leading to downfall. If it is said like that, Venerable, if a monk threatens a monk with a letter, what happens? It is an offense. Similarly, if threatening is done through letters, gestures, what others say, and passing it from one to another, all of these become offenses. Similarly, if a monk who is mentally disturbed, a monk who is afflicted by illness, a fool, a mute, a deaf person, someone who is asleep, someone who is drunk, someone who is intoxicated, someone who is in meditative absorption, and those who reside elsewhere are threatened or are made to threaten, all of these become offenses. In short, voice, body, and secluded bed, others taking another's seventh, householders and so on, the fourth is also the same. Venerable, if a noble monk threatens a monk in the noble language, and that monk does not understand the noble language, what happens? It is an offense. If a noble monk threatens a monk in the language of the border regions, and that monk does not understand the language of the border regions, what happens? It is an offense. If a monk from the border regions threatens a monk in the language of the border regions, and that monk does not understand the language of the border regions, what happens?

Bhikkhus, if a monk causes dissension in the Sangha, or approaches dissension, or openly threatens or commissions to threaten a monk who is being instructed, what happens? All will become downfalls. Bhikkhus, if a monk openly commissions a householder to threaten a monk, what happens? It is a downfall. Similarly, with eunuchs, and so on.
