阿难请问说：尊者，世尊说比丘做新坐具时，为了使新的颜色不悦意，应当用旧坐具如来的一拃围绕缝边。如果比丘为了使新的颜色不悦意，不用旧坐具如来的一拃围绕缝边而使用新坐具，则成为舍堕。这是什么意思呢？尊者，如果比丘不用如来的一拃或一指、半指来衡量，而让别人做新的坐具并使用，会怎么样呢？犯恶作。如果为了别人做新的坐具，会怎么样呢？犯恶作。如果是为别人未完成的而做并使用，会怎么样呢？犯恶作。在家人面前让人做新的坐具并使用，会怎么样呢？成为舍堕。同样地，对于沙弥、沙弥尼、式叉摩尼、学戒女、最初不和合者、先前犯戒者、以盗窃为生者、异住者、不应住者乃至承认者，让人做新的坐具并使用，会怎么样呢？成为舍堕。尊者，如果比丘让此外的其他外道、沙门、婆罗门、修行者、遍行者做新的坐具并使用，会怎么样呢？成为舍堕。如果为住在其他道者做新的坐具，会怎么样呢？犯恶作。尊者，如果比丘不用如来的一拃或一指、半指来衡量，而让人做新的坐具并使用，但不会成为舍堕，有这种情况吗？阿难，有。像这样，新的坐具的线可以使用，但材料不可使用；线不可使用，但材料可以使用；或者两者都不可使用。不可使用的有：木棉、牛毛、鹿毛、与羊毛混合的以及未缝缀的。像这样的新坐具可以让人做。

Venerable Ānanda asked: Venerable, the Blessed One said that when a bhikkhu makes a new sitting cloth, in order to make the new color unappealing, the edge of the old sitting cloth, one span of the Tathāgata, should be sewn around it. If a bhikkhu, in order to make the new color unappealing, does not sew the edge of the old sitting cloth, one span of the Tathāgata, around it and uses the new sitting cloth, it becomes a Nissaggiya Pācittiya. What does this mean? Venerable, if a bhikkhu does not measure with one span of the Tathāgata, or one finger, or half a finger, but has someone else make a new sitting cloth and uses it, what happens? He commits a dukkata. If he makes a new sitting cloth for someone else, what happens? He commits a dukkata. If he makes it for someone else's unfinished one and uses it, what happens? He commits a dukkata. If he has a householder make a new sitting cloth in front of him and uses it, what happens? It becomes a Nissaggiya Pācittiya. Similarly, for a novice monk, a novice nun, a female trainee, a female observing the precepts, one who was initially not in harmony, one who had previously broken the precepts, one who lives by stealing, one who lives separately, one who should not live there, up to one who acknowledges it, if he has them make a new sitting cloth and uses it, what happens? It becomes a Nissaggiya Pācittiya. Venerable, if a bhikkhu has other outsiders, non-Buddhists, ascetics, Brahmins, practitioners, or wanderers make a new sitting cloth and uses it, what happens? It becomes a Nissaggiya Pācittiya. If he makes a new sitting cloth for those who live in other realms, what happens? He commits a dukkata. Venerable, if a bhikkhu does not measure with one span of the Tathāgata, or one finger, or half a finger, but has someone else make a new sitting cloth and uses it, but it does not become a Nissaggiya Pācittiya, is there such a case? Ānanda, yes. Like this, the thread of the new sitting cloth can be used, but the material cannot be used; the thread cannot be used, but the material can be used; or both cannot be used. What cannot be used are: cotton, cow hair, deer hair, mixed with sheep wool, and unstitched. Such a new sitting cloth can be made.
