The verse says: Messenger letters gestures and, blaming others transmission and, madness and mental disturbance and, sensory impairment deaf dumb foolish and, sleepiness delirium great intoxication and, entering samadhi walking last also. Vinaya Sutra Great Treatise, eleventh volume, is the last. Monks, suppose a monk is counted in the Sangha, if he mocks or ridicules a messenger, what will happen? A minor offense is committed. Similarly, letters and, gestures and, blaming others and, transmission, what will happen? A minor offense is committed. Monks, suppose a monk is counted in the Sangha, if he mocks or ridicules a mad monk, what will happen? A minor offense is committed. Similarly, the mentally disturbed and, the sensory impaired and, the foolish and, the deaf and dumb and, the sleepy and, the unsuccessful in work and, the greatly intoxicated and, the entered into samadhi and, the monk residing elsewhere, if they are mocked or ridiculed, what will happen? A minor offense is committed. Monks, suppose a monk mocks or ridicules a bhikshuni and, a sikshamana and, a sramanera and, a sramanerika, what will happen? A minor offense is committed. Monks, suppose a bhikshuni is counted in the Sangha, if she mocks or ridicules a bhikshuni, what will happen? A downfall offense is committed. If a bhikshu and, a sikshamana and, a sramanera and, a sramanerika are mocked or ridiculed, what will happen? A minor offense is committed. Monks, suppose one who has been granted precepts is counted in the Sangha, if he is mocked or ridiculed, what will happen? A downfall offense is committed. If a bhikshuni and, a sramanera and, a sramanerika and, one who has previously committed a downfall offense, etc., are mocked or ridiculed, what will happen? A minor offense is committed. The Venerable Ananda asked the Buddha Bhagavan: Monks, what is it that the Bhagavan said, "If the precepts are not heeded, a downfall offense is committed"?
