acts in between. Furthermore, if any bhikkhuni washes by holding hands, she commits a pācittiya. Moreover, "what" refers to the twelve sections. "Holding hands" means holding hands. Regarding "washes," there are two types of washing: the washing of empowerment and the washing of entering. In this context, it refers to the washing of entering. "Commits a pācittiya" is as mentioned before. So, how does one become liable to a pācittiya? As much as a bhikkhuni slightly enters the washing, if she washes by holding hands, she will entirely become liable to a pācittiya. The third of the twenty-seventh pācittiya is completed. The basis of the story is in Śrāvastī. At that time, in Śrāvastī, there were two groups of joyful people, one was a group of joyful people of the kṣatriya caste, and the other was a group of joyful people of the brahmins. The group of joyful people of the kṣatriya caste was skilled in battle, and the group of joyful people of the brahmins was skilled in dance. When the two groups of joyful people competed by fighting, the group of joyful people of the kṣatriya caste would win; and when they competed by dancing, the group of joyful people of the brahmins would win. Then, the group of joyful people of the kṣatriya caste thought: From whom should we learn dance? They thought: The venerable Sthūlanandā is ordained from the Śākya clan and is skilled in all crafts and all activities. So, they went to where Sthūlanandā was and said to Sthūlanandā: "Venerable, are you somewhat skilled in dance?" She said: "What crafts and activities am I not skilled in?" They said: "For a while, we will offer food again, please teach us dance." She said: "Turn your hands like this, turn your waist like this, put your feet like this." Like that, until she had the group of joyful people of the kṣatriya caste learn dance. Then, that group of joyful people of the kṣatriya caste defeated the group of joyful people of the brahmins with dance. Then, the group of joyful people of the brahmins said: "Who taught you?" They said: "Sthūlanandā did."

Having spoken, those monks, disciples of the Shakya, said: 'The conduct of monks and the conduct of brahmacharis is shameful. Why do you allow people to learn dancing like this?' They would scold, accuse, and speak ill. At that time, the bhikshunis reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from 'This event happened,' proceeded to establish the precepts. Again, any bhikshuni who causes someone to learn dancing commits a downfall. Again, 'who' refers to Thullananda. 'Dancing' refers to the movement of hands and feet. 'Causes to learn' means to teach. 'Commits a downfall' means the same as before. So, how does one commit a downfall? If a bhikshuni causes someone to learn even a little dancing, she will completely commit a downfall. The fourth of the twenty-seventh downfall is complete. The origin of the story is in Shravasti (Jetavana). When the Blessed One forbade causing people to learn dancing, afterwards, Thullananda went to the group of Ananda and taught dancing, starting from 'teaching dancing' until the establishment of the precepts. Again, any bhikshuni who teaches dancing commits a downfall. Again, 'who' refers to Thullananda. Similarly, 'teaches dancing' means teaching approximately. 'Commits a downfall' means the same as before. So, how does one commit a downfall? If a bhikshuni teaches even a little dancing, she will completely commit a downfall. The fifth of the twenty-seventh downfall is complete. The origin of the story is in Shravasti (Jetavana). Similarly, one should speak up to going to see dancing, starting from 'going to see dancing' until the establishment of the precepts. Again, any bhikshuni who goes to see dancing commits a downfall. If a bhikshuni goes to see even a little dancing, she will completely commit a downfall. The sixth of the twenty-seventh downfall is complete. The origin of the story is in Shravasti (Jetavana).
