When this was being done, the nuns spoke to the monks, and the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, starting from "this happened," made the basis for the precepts up to the establishment of the precepts, thus establishing the basis for the precepts: If a nun has taken possession of a robe, unties the firm knot, and separates any of the five robes from outside the boundary, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. Thus, the basis of the precepts was established. When the Blessed One was in Rajagriha, relying on the great elder Kashyapa, because there was permission not to be separated from the Samghati, when the basis of the precepts was established again, the elder nuns went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, how should we recite this basis of the precepts? Then, the Blessed One praised the nuns for wanting the precepts, respecting the precepts, and reducing the use of the precepts, and instructed the nuns: Nuns, the former is the established one, this is the permission, so my female disciples should also recite the basis of the precepts of the Vinaya in this way: If a nun has taken possession of a robe, unties the firm knot, and separates any of the five robes from outside the boundary for one night, unless the Sangha has permitted it, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. What is meant by having taken possession of a robe is the same as above. What is meant by the five robes is any of the Sanghati and the upper robe, etc., that have been blessed as robes. What is meant by separating from outside the boundary is until dawn. What is meant by unless the Sangha has permitted it is that the Sangha has already permitted it. What is meant by an offense entailing forfeiture is the same as above. So, how does it become an offense? The intervals of offense are: one house and two houses, a wall between the assembly and the land, the surroundings of a moat, houses and shops, trading places, upper floors, wandering, battlefields, battlefield gathering places, heretics, vehicles, boats and monasteries, trees and inquiries.
