He saw him sitting in the lotus position. Even when he changed his posture, he saw him sitting like that. He thought: This monk doesn't break his lotus position during the day, so where does his food come from, and how does he get it? I should ask him about it. He also thought: If I go near and ask him now, those heretics will see me with the monk and mock me. When it's my turn to guard the dwelling, I'll ask him without hesitation. Then, at another time, it was his turn to guard the dwelling. The heretics had all left, and he went to where the Pratyekabuddha was and asked him: Holy one, I go back and forth every day for food and fruit, but I have never seen you break your lotus position or go out for alms. Do you eat joy? He replied: I don't eat joy. When it's time to eat, I go for alms, bring it here, and eat it. He asked: Where do you go for alms? He replied: To the north, to the place of unpleasant sound. What is the place of unpleasant sound like? He replied: I have no complete attachment, it is very special, I go to a special place, and after dying from there, I will also go to a special place. But if I don't go to the north, to the place of unpleasant sound, I beg for food among the gods of the Thirty-Three. He asked: What are the gods of the Thirty-Three like? He replied: They have color, much happiness, high palaces, long life, they dwell for a long time, they exist for a long time. He thought: This is a great being, I will offer him today's alms. So he said to that Pratyekabuddha: Holy one, please accept my alms offering today. He replied: You must have also certainly come forth from the householder's life, how do you think to give me alms? He replied: Although it is like that, please definitely benefit me. You are glory and merit, you are a dharma speaker.

Supreme among all! Through your diligence, this world has become as if completely adorned. He also promised. Then, that hermit, realizing that his silence was a promise, returned to his dwelling. There, he had previously picked and placed a small handful of wild barley. After cleaning it, he went to a cattle pen not far from the dwelling. Then, he took milk and cooked it in the milk. Once cooked, he offered the food to that Pratyekabuddha. Venerable one, he also, in order to benefit him, accepted that food, and in order to show the Dharma with his body, he rose into the middle of the sky like a swan king spreading its wings. Seeing this, he became extremely devoted, and with a joyful, satisfied, and delighted mind, he knelt on the ground and made the following aspiration: By this act of offering food and completely giving away the Dharma, may I never be born in hell, as an animal, or as a hungry ghost. May I always be born among the gods, and even if I die from there, may I be born in Uttarakuru, and then again among the gods. May I comprehend whatever collection of virtues he has comprehended, and may I please a teacher who is far superior to this, and may I never displease him. So he said. Monks, the one who became a hermit at that time was this Mahakashyapa. At that time, due to the ripening of the karma of offering that small handful of wild barley, he was born a thousand times in Uttarakuru, and a thousand times among the gods. After dying from the gods, he was also born into the Brahmin caste. By the power of aspiration, I pleased a teacher who is far superior to a hundred thousand kotis of Pratyekabuddhas, and he also obtained that collection of virtues. Monks, therefore, one should respect the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, give alms, and accumulate merit. By doing so, one can become one who possesses such a collection of virtues, like Kashyapa, monks, you should learn.

It should be done like this. Furthermore, when the monks had doubts, they asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what deeds did the venerable Mahakashyapa do, and what ripening of karma did he accumulate, that he thus renounced, abandoned all defilements, attained the state of an Arhat, and was shown by the Blessed One to be the foremost among those who are content with little, who are satisfied, and who speak of the virtues of purification?" The Blessed One told the monks: "Monks, the deeds done and accumulated by this person should be explained in detail. Monks, in the past, during this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, there appeared a Fully Awakened Buddha named Light Protector, who possessed knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a guide for taming beings, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Blessed One. In his doctrine, this person renounced, and in that place, this person remained in celibacy for ten thousand years, completely guarded, but did not generate ultimate wisdom. However, at the time of death, he made a prayer: 'May I rejoice in the prophecy that the Blessed One Light Protector gave to the Brahmin boy, saying: 'Teacher, in the future, when the lifespan of beings is one hundred years, you will become the Fully Awakened Buddha Shakyamuni.' May I not be displeased.' Thus he did. At that time, the one from whom he renounced, was the one whom the Fully Awakened Buddha Light Protector prophesied to be the foremost among those who are content with little, who are satisfied, and who speak of the virtues of purification. At that time, this person also made a prayer: 'Just as the Fully Awakened Buddha Light Protector prophesied that my preceptor would be the foremost among those who are content with little, who are satisfied, and who speak of the virtues of purification, so may I also receive a prophecy when the Brahmin boy attains perfect enlightenment.' Thus he did. Monks, by dwelling in celibacy there, he obtained the fruit here. By fully maturing his faculties there, he obtained liberation here. What was the prayer he made there?
