Explaining the fifth pārājika. Explaining the fifth pārājika. In the interlude of recounting past lives, (there are) small desire and both, good looks, pure conduct, supernormal knowledge, wealth and high birth, small desire and Kāśyapa. The monks arose with doubts, and in order to cut off all doubts, they petitioned the Blessed One. Venerable Mahākāśyapa and the daughter of the Śākya clan, please look upon the matter of the two having small desire. The Blessed One spoke, "Monks, not only now, but also in the past." Monks, these two have done deeds and accumulated merit, from here onwards, expand upon it. Monks, in the past, in a certain royal palace, there lived a farmer who would rise early in the morning, take his hoe and plow, and go to plow the fields. He instructed his wife, "When the sun rises, bring the midday meal." His wife brought the midday meal, and at that very moment, a solitary buddha like a rhinoceros horn also came. Upon seeing him, the farmer prostrated and stood up. The solitary buddha said... (omitted in the middle)... The solitary buddha sat in the sky, accepted the alms, and made a vow: "Like this, being controlled by all defilements, whatever wrong has been done... (omitted in the middle)... May we two become small in desire." Monks, the farmer at that time and in that era was this Kāśyapa. The farmer's wife at that time and in that era was this virtuous woman of the Śākya clan. Because they two offered alms to the solitary buddha at that time and made a vow, these two have become small in desire. Therefore, monks, in order to abandon desire, one should strive. In this way, you will generate the perfection of qualities. Monks, you should train in this way. Again, monks... (omitted in the middle)... What deeds did the venerable Mahākāśyapa and the virtuous daughter of the Śākya clan do, and for what reason did both of them go forth? (Up to) the petition. The Blessed One spoke.

Granted. It is due to the power of aspiration. Where is it? Monks, in the past, in a city outside a great city, there was a potter's pottery workshop. In the time when the Buddha did not reside, self-enlightened Buddhas, compassionate to the poor and lowly, and engaged in benefiting sentient beings, would appear. Then, a self-enlightened Buddha went to the place where the potter's pottery workshop was, and after arriving, said this to the potter: Good sir, if you have no discomfort, may I dwell in one side of the pottery workshop? After saying this, the potter said this to the self-enlightened Buddha: Noble one, please dwell as you please. Then, that self-enlightened Buddha spread a grass mat on one side of the pottery workshop, and sat in the lotus position, like a naga king curling up to sleep. Then, a second self-enlightened Buddha also came, and from "also came" to the potter being pleased by this, he stayed in the second room of that pottery workshop. A third one also came and stayed in the third room. Similarly, a fourth one also came and stayed in the fourth room. Then, after the sun set and it was known that it was night, those four self-enlightened Buddhas all entered into the fire element samadhi, and the potter saw from the crack in the door that the entire pottery workshop was burning, intensely burning, completely burning, intensely burning and becoming one flame, and then he thought: Such worthy recipients have come, and they are residing in my pottery workshop, I am truly powerful and possess the ability to benefit others. He also said: Alas, worthy recipients who have come, it has been a long time since I have seen you. In this world and the next, I will become happy. Those self-enlightened Buddhas also, in order to accumulate roots of virtue for the patron, spent the night with meditation, liberation, samadhi, and absorption, and created joy for each other. Then, those self-enlightened Buddhas said to one of them: Who are you? Where? Why? How did you renounce? They said that

Having spoken, he said to them, "Have you, venerable ones, heard of a king named Ranaraka in the land of Kalinga?" They said, "We have heard of it, and we have also heard that King Ranaraka possesses wealth, a vast territory, and many elephant mounts." He said, "What you have heard is indeed so, but I, having seen the faults of kingship, have renounced the world." They said, "Having seen what faults of kingship did you renounce the world?" He said, "If there are faults, they are not so great. What are they like? Listen, monks. When I was sitting on the top of the palace upstairs, a bird was carrying a piece of meat and flying in the sky, and for that reason it was harassed by many others. It dropped it, and others picked it up. The one who dropped it was released, and the one who picked it up was surrounded by all. In this way, they were robbing each other. I was born to pay attention to it properly, and I thought: 'The one who takes is bound, and the one who abandons is released. Because of this, I will fight, argue, and compete with the kings under the sun for the sake of enjoying the vast kingship. There is no doubt about it. I am satisfied with the happiness of kingship!' Thinking like this, I found that cause and condition, and I was determined to rely purely on the forest of asceticism, and there I realized the enlightenment of the solitary Buddha." He also said, "When a bird carries a piece of meat, I see other birds surrounding and following it. Having recognized the qualities of desire in this way, one will practice alone like a rhinoceros." They said, "Having heard his words, they asked how the second one renounced the world, until 'Have you, venerable ones, heard of a king named Gadongmale in the land of Mithila?' Until 'When I was sitting on the top of the palace upstairs.' When I saw two bulls colliding and scolding each other because of desire, I was born to pay attention to it properly."
