Again, the monks arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they requested the Blessed One, the Buddha: "Blessed One, what deeds did Serkya Sangmo (a person's name) do and accumulate, that she has matured in such a way that she is beautiful and pleasing to behold?" Monks, in a past time, in a king's palace, a king ruled the kingdom, up to a wealthy merchant, possessing much wealth, enjoying prosperity. When he looked at the crowds of people, he saw hundreds and thousands of beings with rough hands and feet, emaciated bodies, disheveled hair, covered in dust, with worn faces, afflicted by heat and cold, and full of suffering. Others were clothed in fine garments, adorned with jewels, riding horses, elephants, people, and chariots, possessing great wealth. He thought to himself: "These suffering beings have become like this because they did not give alms. Moreover, they are unable to give alms sufficiently, therefore, after they die, they will be born in a very inferior state. Those who have given special alms have become wealthy like this. I too should give alms to others without being stingy, so that I may obtain such wealth. I will give alms, so that I will not suffer in future lives." When he looked up, he saw a Pratyekabuddha wearing monastic robes, holding a cloth banner, holding a rosary, holding a black begging bowl, alone, walking beautifully in the sky. He thought to himself, "Whoever this great being is, who receives the merit of the land in various places, is a sign that I am powerful and beneficial to others." Thinking this, he said, "Whoever offers alms to him today shall receive the most excellent blessing of the city." The merchant was also gathered in that assembly, and he thought to himself, "I shall give alms to everyone." So he instructed his household, "Be sure to offer alms from my house without delay, and go and see." Thinking this, he rose and quickly went home. His wife also saw his miraculous power and developed faith in her heart. She said to the maidservant, "Maidservant, the merit should be mine. I will give you the best food." The maidservant said to her, "You are the mistress, and you have power over my life, but you do not have power over merit, so I cannot give it to you." She angrily argued and struggled, pulling at her. The bracelet on her arm struck her head, and the bracelet hit her head, causing her head to be injured and bleed. At that time, the merchant also arrived, and he asked what had happened. She told him in detail what had occurred. The merchant was very angry, and he had the maidservant adorned with all her ornaments and locked up in the house. Then he told the king what had happened. The king said, "She deserves to be the mistress, you have done well."
