After being violated, they hid themselves in shame within the thickets and forests. Those who escaped spread rumors among the Shakyas, saying that the Shakya women had been violated. Then, the Shakyas, holding bows and arrows and brandishing weapons, dug pits in the road and blocked the way, capturing those robbers. At that time, some said, "What is there to forgive these men? Kill them!" Others said, "First, take them there and ask the Shakya women, 'Which limb of which one committed the offense? We shall cut off that limb.'" They took those robbers to the Shakya women and said, "Come here, tell us which of these robbers harmed you with which limb." They said, "This leader of the robbers is innocent and does not cause harm. If he had stopped those robbers, they would not have succeeded. Release him!" So they released him. That man, having escaped from the brink of death, knelt at their feet and said, "Wise ones, you have generated faith and are going to offer alms to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. What good will it do you to kill these men? Please forgive these evildoers!" They retrieved the stolen goods and released the robbers. Afterward, those Shakyas dressed the Shakya women in clothes and adorned them with ornaments, and they also decorated the carts with water. Then, riding in the carts, they went before the Blessed One. The Blessed One was seated on the prepared seat before the Sangha of monks, and the Shakyas and Shakya women began to offer alms to the Buddha and the Sangha of monks. The Shakya women did not give food to the group of six monks, and the Shakyas asked, "Why do you not offer food to the noble ones?" They said, "They have already eaten." "Where did they eat?" "Right there." "Who offered it?" "We did." "How did you naked ones offer it?" "Therefore, these men kept staring at us, and when we covered our bodies with leaves and came out from the thickets and forests to offer alms, they stared at us and had many things to say." "Then go and see them; these men are in a bad situation."

Because they are frequently used, food is not given to them. They sat there without saying a word. Then they distributed food to the Sangha of monks and said, 'Venerable ones, if you say that this path is dangerous, we will walk carefully and cautiously.' At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, 'Therefore, a forest-inspecting monk should be appointed. A forest-inspecting monk who does not possess five qualities should not be appointed if unappointed, and should be dismissed if appointed. What are the five? Acting out of desire, acting out of hatred, acting out of delusion, acting out of fear, and not knowing whether the forest has been inspected or not. A forest-inspecting monk who possesses five qualities should be appointed if unappointed, and should not be dismissed if appointed. What are the five? Not acting out of desire, not acting out of hatred, not acting out of delusion, not acting out of fear, and knowing whether the forest has been inspected or not.' The appointment should be done as follows: After arranging the dwelling, strike the ghanta and admonish the monks with words of inquiry. When the entire Sangha has gathered and is in harmony, first, consent should be sought: 'So-and-so, do you wish to be the forest inspector of the Sangha?' If willing, one should say 'willing.' Then a monk should make a request and proceed with the action. Venerable members of the Sangha, please listen. If this monk, named so-and-so, is willing to be the forest inspector of the Sangha, and if it is the Sangha's time and you permit, may the Sangha grant it. The Sangha appoints this monk, named so-and-so, as the forest inspector of the Sangha. This monk, named so-and-so, is the forest inspector of the Sangha. This is the request, and the action should be done as follows: Venerable members of the Sangha, please listen. If this monk, named so-and-so, is willing to be the forest inspector of the Sangha, for that reason, the Sangha appoints the one named so-and-so as the forest inspector, and the one named so-and-so is the forest inspector of the Sangha. Those venerable ones who approve of the appointment of the one named so-and-so as the forest inspector, let them remain silent.
