Whoever gives such alms to the Brahmins, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who are free from desire among the ascetic outsiders, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of entering the stream, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered the stream, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of once-returning, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who once-return, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of non-returning, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who do not return, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of an Arhat, whoever gives a hundred meals to an Arhat, whoever offers a park to the Sangha of monks from the four directions, whoever has a temple built in that very park, whoever offers lodging in that very temple, such as: beds and small beds, cushions and woolen cushions, mattresses and pillows, round stools, etc., whoever offers offerings in that very temple that are in accordance with constant offerings, whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, takes refuge in the Dharma, takes refuge in the Sangha, and takes the precepts, and whoever cultivates loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, living beings, and creatures, then this almsgiving is of greater fruit than that almsgiving. Householder Brahmin, like a great Sala tree, gives such alms to the Brahmins in due time, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who are free from desire among the ascetic outsiders, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of entering the stream, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered the stream, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of once-returning, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who once-return, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of non-returning, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who do not return, whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered in order to realize the fruit of an Arhat,

And whoever gives a hundred meals to those who have entered for the sake of manifest enlightenment, and whoever gives a hundred meals to arhats, and whoever offers a grove to the sangha of monks from the four directions, and whoever has a monastery built in that very grove, and whoever offers such dwelling places in that very monastery, namely beds and small beds, cushions and woolen cushions, pillows and bolsters, and round stools, and whoever offers offerings in accordance with the constant causes in that very monastery, and whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, and whoever takes refuge in the Dharma, and whoever takes refuge in the Sangha, and whoever takes the bases of training, and whoever cultivates a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, living beings, and creatures, and whoever dwells contemplating impermanence in all conditioned phenomena, and contemplates cessation, contemplates detachment, contemplates cessation, and dwells contemplating abandonment, that is giving. Therefore, this giving has a very great result. Householder, therefore, you should dwell contemplating impermanence in all conditioned phenomena in this way, and contemplate cessation, contemplate detachment, contemplate cessation, and dwell contemplating abandonment. You should be taught thus, householder, you should be taught thus. Then, the wicked householder Good-Giving, having praised and rejoiced in the words spoken by the Blessed One, bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. At another time, while burning a butter lamp at night in his own house and reading the Buddha's teachings, those who lived on the king's leftovers and wandered around the city saw it through the cracks in the closed door. They said to him: Householder, the king has ordered a proclamation to be made that no one in Shravasti should light a fire at night. Whoever lights a fire will be punished with a fine of sixty karshapanas, or will be imprisoned until death. Why are you lighting a fire at night? He said: Wise ones, this is not fire, but a butter lamp. Householder, can't it do the work of fire?
