Just as a great Brahmin Sala tree, measured by the seasons, makes such an offering to the Brahmins, and whichever gives a hundred meals to those who are free from desire among the desiring non-Buddhist hermits, and whichever gives a hundred meals to one who has entered the path to realize the fruit of stream-entry, and whichever gives a hundred meals to a stream-enterer, and whichever gives a hundred meals to one who has entered the path to realize the fruit of once-returning, and whichever gives a hundred meals to a once-returner, and whichever gives a hundred meals to one who has entered the path to realize the fruit of non-returning, and whichever gives a hundred meals to a non-returner, and whichever gives one meal to one who has entered the path to realize the fruit of an Arhat, which is the offering? Like a great Sala tree, a Brahmin gives such a gift to the Brahmins according to the season; and giving a hundred meals to those ascetics among the outsiders who are free from desire; giving a hundred meals to one who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of stream-entry; giving a hundred meals to a stream-enterer; giving a hundred meals to one who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of once-returning; giving a hundred meals to a once-returner; giving a hundred meals to one who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of non-returning; giving a hundred meals to a non-returner; giving a hundred meals to one who has entered for the sake of realizing the fruit of an Arhat; giving a hundred meals to an Arhat; and offering a monastery to the Sangha of monks of the four directions, and whatever it is to have a temple built in that very monastery, the fruit of this giving is greater than that giving.
