Having agreed to it, he put on his lower garment that morning. Carrying his bowl and robes, he went to that rocky mountain to beg for alms. After begging for alms there, he thought, "This place of the gods is very noisy during the day. I should eat my alms in a quiet place outside the rocky mountain." So he came out of the rocky mountain, saying, "This is peaceful, this is peaceful," and went to that lake. He placed his bowl and water strainer to one side, washed his two feet, soaked his two hands, strained the water, picked up the fallen leaves, sat down, and began to eat. Then he soaked his two hands again, washed his mouth, and put his bowl and water strainer back in their place. He washed his two feet, leaned against a tree, and sat in the lotus position, like a snake king curling up to sleep, and sat quietly. That day, he did not catch a single wild animal disturbed by the scent of humans. Then, the hunter got up early the next morning and went to that lake. He began to set up his hunting tools, traps, and snares. But he did not see a single wild animal. He thought to himself: "My hunting tools, traps, and snares are all useful. Why haven't I caught a single wild animal? What is the reason for this?" So he began to patrol the shore of the lake. He saw human footprints and followed them. He saw the solitary buddha sitting there in a peaceful posture, and he thought, "These renunciates like to practice in such places. If I don't kill this fellow, they will surely cut off my livelihood. I must kill him at all costs." So, with a heart devoid of compassion, he abandoned the next life, and with a poisoned arrow, he drew the bowstring to his ear, like drawing a bow, and shot the solitary buddha in a vital spot. The great solitary buddha thought, "It would not be good if this hunter became too remorseful and depressed. Now I should show him some miraculous powers." So, like a swan king spreading its wings, he rose into the sky and manifested burning, brightness, and rain, and other miraculous transformations.

The performance of miraculous displays was initiated. Because ordinary individuals readily place their faith in miracles, the hunter, as if severing the roots of a tree, fell at the feet of the Pratyekabuddha and said: "O true field of merit, please descend! Please descend! Please draw me, who am sinking in the mire of afflictions, from this swamp!" The Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for the hunter, descended from the sky above. Then, the hunter removed the arrow, applied a medicinal balm to the wound, and said: "O noble one, please be patient. If you were to mend the wound with a patch of gold, I would also provide it." The Pratyekabuddha thought: "I have already obtained what I was to obtain through this body of pus and blood. Therefore, now I shall enter the realm of nirvana without remainder." Thinking thus, in front of the hunter, he again rose into the center of the sky, displayed various kinds of miracles, and then completely passed into nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder. Because the hunter was wealthy, he piled up all kinds of fragrant wood and burned the corpse. Then, he extinguished the fire with milk, placed the bones in a golden vase, and had a stupa built at the crossroads of the main road. He raised umbrellas, victory banners, and flags, and made offerings with incense, garlands, perfumes, incense, powders, and musical instruments. Then, kneeling on both knees, he made this prayer: "May I not experience the maturation of the negative karma of harming such a true field of merit, but through this root of virtue from offering, may I be born into a wealthy, affluent, and prosperous family." Monks, that hunter at that time was this Angulimala. Due to the ripening of the karma of striking the Pratyekabuddha's vital point with a poisoned arrow, he suffered in the great hell of Avici for an eon. And due to the remainder of that karma, he was born on the shore of a lake for five hundred lifetimes.
