Having been born as a deer, the time came when he was struck by an arrow. Even though he attained Arhatship until now, he completely passed into nirvana due to the arrow. Whatever offering was made and prayers were offered, he is now born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. What deeds did the venerable Arjaka perform? Due to the ripening of that karma, he hid his body, which was ripe, in a pile of silk. He pleased the teacher and did not displease him. With his ripe body, together with the teacher, the assembly of the Shravakas, and the queen with her retinue, he made offerings of his body. Thus, he obtained such a collection of merits. Monks, Arjaka himself performed and accumulated deeds that resulted in the acquisition of karma, the transformation of conditions, being close like a light, and not being devoured by demons. Who else will experience the deeds done and accumulated by Arjaka himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external earth element, nor will they ripen in the water element, nor will they ripen in the fire element, nor will they ripen in the wind element. Rather, the virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. Actions, even after hundreds of eons, will not be wasted; when the conditions are met, they will become fruits for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in times when Buddhas did not appear, solitary Buddhas, inferior, compassionate towards the poor, fond of remote dwellings, like a rhinoceros horn, alone, who became the object of offerings in the world, appeared in the world. In a corner of the snowy mountains, five hundred solitary Buddhas resided. One of those solitary Buddhas became ill, and the others said to him, 'You should cultivate medicinal herbs and perform rituals for your recovery.' He went to another rocky mountain and agreed to stay overnight in a potter's yard. That night he became ill, and the time came. The potter saw him and thought, 'This renunciate is ripening among the fired or unfired pottery, and the world desires cleanliness.'
