看現在是誰在洗澡。那個人聽了從摩揭陀國來的國王，名叫工巧形心（Bzos byangs gzugs can snying po），說要按照神的旨意去尋找，就到那裡去看了。無論多久，都看到六群比丘在洗澡，他就到國王那裡去說：神啊，是那六群比丘在洗澡啊。國王也坐在他所設置的座位上。過了很久，國王又對屬於秘密的人說：喂，內臣，你去看看現在是誰在洗澡。那個人聽了從摩揭陀國來的國王，名叫工巧形心，說要按照神的旨意去尋找，就到那裡去看了。無論多久，仍然看到六群比丘在洗澡，他就到國王那裡去說：神啊，仍然是那六群比丘在洗澡啊。國王說：有智慧的人啊，那麼他們長期以來都在妨礙我，拿水來，我要用灌頂的沐浴來洗澡。他們取了水，國王就在那裡用灌頂的沐浴來洗澡，然後到世尊所在的地方去，走到世尊的腳下，用頭頂禮，沒有聽法就從世尊面前離開了。然後，世尊對具壽阿難陀說：阿難陀，為什麼工巧形心國王沒有聽法就離開了？尊者，這位工巧形心國王被六群比丘妨礙了。為什麼？他把當時的情況詳細地稟告了。然後，世尊心想：無論發生什麼過失，都是因為比丘們洗澡的緣故。因此，比丘們不應該洗澡。這樣想之後，世尊說：因此，比丘們不應該洗澡。世尊說了比丘們不應該洗澡之後，比丘們從此以後不洗澡，那些人被污垢的泥漿沾染，身體變得臭氣熏天，婆羅門和居士們說：這位臭氣熏天的聖者是誰？比丘們說：是我們。聖者們，為什麼不洗澡？世尊不允許啊。

Look who is bathing now. That person, having heard from King Bzos byangs gzugs can snying po, who came from Magadha, saying that he would seek according to the divine command, went there and looked. No matter how long, he saw the group of six monks bathing, and he went to the king and said: O God, those six monks are bathing. The king was also sitting on the seat he had set up. After a long time, the king again said to a person belonging to the secret: Hey, inner minister, go and see who is bathing now. That person, having heard from King Bzos byangs gzugs can snying po, who came from Magadha, saying that he would seek according to the divine command, went there and looked. No matter how long, he still saw the group of six monks bathing, and he went to the king and said: O God, still those six monks are bathing. The king said: O wise ones, then they have been hindering me for a long time, bring water, I will bathe with the anointment bath. They took water, and the king bathed there with the anointment bath, and then went to where the Blessed One was, went to the feet of the Blessed One, bowed his head, and left from the presence of the Blessed One without listening to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, why did King Gzugs can snying po leave without listening to the Dharma? Venerable, this King Gzugs can snying po was hindered by the group of six monks. Why? He reported the situation in detail. Then, the Blessed One thought: Whatever fault has occurred is because the monks are bathing. Therefore, the monks should not bathe. Having thought this, the Blessed One said: Therefore, the monks should not bathe. After the Blessed One said that the monks should not bathe, the monks did not bathe from then on, and those people were stained with dirt and mud, and their bodies became smelly, and the Brahmins and householders said: Who is this smelly holy one? The monks said: It is us. Holy ones, why do you not bathe? The Blessed One does not allow it.

When they said, "Can you be purified by holding dirty filth?" the monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, it is permitted to bathe every half month." After the Blessed One instructed that bathing was permitted every half month, when the summer season arrived, the monks were afflicted by the heat, and they became pale, emaciated, weak, and their necks and bodies lost vitality. Brahmins and faithful householders said, "Venerable ones, why have you become pale, emaciated, weak, and your necks and bodies lost vitality?" The monks said, "We are afflicted by the heat." They asked, "Why don't you bathe?" The monks replied, "The Blessed One does not permit it." When they said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, except for the hot season, it is allowed." When the monks became ill, they went to visit a doctor and asked, "Good sir, we are sick, please give us medicine." The doctor said, "Venerable ones, if you take turns using an umbrella and bathe, you will recover." The monks replied, "Good sir, the Blessed One does not permit it." The doctor said, "Venerable ones, your teacher is compassionate, and if you report this as a reason, he will surely allow it; such an opportunity will arise." When they said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, except when sick, it is allowed." After the monks performed the duties of the Sangha and stupas, they were covered with mud and dirt, as if covered up. Brahmins and faithful householders came and asked, "Venerable ones, why are you covered with mud and dirt, as if covered up? What is wrong with bathing?" The monks replied, "The Blessed One does not permit it." When they said this, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, except during work, it is allowed."
