Wise ones, for me too, it is difficult to approach the Blessed Buddha and difficult to tolerate, so I cannot inform the Blessed Buddha either. Venerable Ānanda, if you, Venerable Ānanda, also find it difficult to approach the Blessed Buddha and difficult to tolerate, and you are unwilling to inform the Blessed Buddha, then how do you, Venerable Ānanda, know through signs or teachings that the Blessed One will go to a certain place after promising to stay in retreat during the rainy season? How do you know through signs? How do you know through teachings? Wise ones, after the Blessed One promises to stay in retreat during the rainy season, the Blessed One will pay special attention to and dwell in the direction he wishes to go, and he will also praise those places. Venerable Ānanda, where does the Blessed One pay attention to and dwell? And whom does he praise? Wise ones, the Blessed One pays attention to and dwells in Kosala, and he praises the people of Shravasti. After hearing what the venerable Ānanda said, they were very happy, rejoiced and praised, and then bowed their heads to the two feet of the venerable Ānanda, and from the bottom of their hearts they thought: The Blessed One will go to Shravasti after promising to stay in retreat during the rainy season, so they prepared the supplies to go to Shravasti. Thereafter, the Blessed One promised to stay in retreat during the rainy season, and after the three summer months had passed, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, go and tell the monks, monks, the Tathagata will go to Kosala for sightseeing, whoever of you is willing to go to Kosala for sightseeing with the Tathagata, prepare your robes.

Those fortunate ones went to where the venerable Ānanda was, bowed their heads at the two feet of the venerable Ānanda, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, many merchants of Rājagṛha said this to the venerable Ānanda: "Venerable Ānanda, how far has the Blessed One departed from here? The wise ones say it is like a wheel-turning king. Venerable Ānanda, how far can a wheel-turning king go? The wise ones say that a wheel-turning king can travel ten yojanas on the road. They prepared gatherings for the Blessed One and the Saṅgha of monks every ten yojanas. They prepared all the cold food on the same day, and they prepared all the warm food each day. Then, the Blessed One was tamed, and the retinue was also tamed; peaceful, and the retinue was also peaceful; liberated, and the retinue was also liberated; extinguished, and the retinue was also extinguished; subdued, and the retinue was also subdued; an Arhat, and the retinue was also Arhats; free from desire, and the retinue was also free from desire; beautiful, and the retinue was also beautiful; like a bull king surrounded by a herd of cows; like an elephant surrounded by a herd of elephant calves; like a lion surrounded by a herd of fanged beasts; like a swan king surrounded by a flock of swans; like a garuda surrounded by a flock of birds; like a Brahmin surrounded by a flock of students; like a skilled physician surrounded by a flock of patients; like a hero surrounded by a flock of troops; like a surveyor surrounded by a flock of people on the road; like a helmsman surrounded by a flock of merchants; like a merchant leader surrounded by a flock of attendants; like a king of a castle surrounded by a flock of ministers; like a wheel-turning king surrounded by a flock of a thousand sons; like the moon surrounded by a flock of stars; like the sun surrounded by a flock of a thousand rays.
