The Blessed One (Sanskrit: Bhagavān, Sanskrit Romanization: Bhagavat, Chinese literal meaning: Bhagavan) was dwelling in Jeta's Grove (Sanskrit: Jetavana, Sanskrit Romanization: Jetavana, Chinese literal meaning: Jetavana), Anathapindada's Park (Sanskrit: Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma, Sanskrit Romanization: Anāthapiṇḍada-ārāma, Chinese literal meaning: Anathapindada-arama) in Shravasti (Sanskrit: Śrāvastī, Sanskrit Romanization: Śrāvastī, Chinese literal meaning: Shravasti). The Venerable Upali (Sanskrit: Āyuṣmān, Sanskrit Romanization: Āyuṣmān, Chinese literal meaning: Ayushman) understood the principle of the wish-fulfilling jewel. In the early morning, he put on his robes, took his bowl and monastic robe, and went to Shravasti to beg for alms. In Shravasti, there was a young spice merchant who had just gotten married. He was setting up his stall, thinking of enjoying happiness with his wife, and an improper thought arose in his mind, so he began to pack up his stall. The Venerable Upali saw this and thought: Now other merchants are setting up their stalls, why is this spice merchant packing up? He pondered repeatedly, thinking: This person has just gotten married, he must want to enjoy happiness with his wife, I should make him lose hope in worldly pleasures. So, he first went to the spice merchant's house, sat on the mat, and said: Girl, come and sit down, I will teach you the Dharma. That girl prostrated to him and sat in front of him to listen to the Dharma. So, he began to teach her the Dharma. After a while, the spice merchant came back and said to his wife: Please offer food to the Venerable Upali and ask him to leave. The Venerable Upali said: Good woman, I have abandoned all my good deeds for you and specially come to teach you the Dharma, don't you want to listen to the Dharma? Sit down and listen to the Dharma. He insisted on making the spice merchant sit down, and as he gradually got rid of worldly attachments, he continued to teach him the Dharma. The spice merchant began to curse: These Shakya monks, their way of practice is shameful! The Brahmin's way of practice is also shameful! They can't even control their own wives! They scold, accuse, and speak harshly. Why do these monks with few desires and contentment knowingly go to those families that easily arouse desire, and forcibly sit on the mat? He kept cursing, accusing, and speaking harshly. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, in response to this event, this origin, this occasion, to the monks

Regarding "gathering the Sangha," etc., it is as before. Regarding "The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, knowingly commit offenses," etc., it is also as before. The Buddha, the Bhagavat, questioned the venerable Charka: "Charka, is it true that you knowingly and intentionally entered a house for the purpose of dalliance, and sat on a seat?" The monk replied, "No." The Buddha, the Bhagavat, rebuked him, saying: "This is not the conduct of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not appropriate, it is not in accordance with the rules. This is not something that a renunciant should do." Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Bhagavat addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, therefore, seeing the ten benefits, the foundation of training for the hearers in the Vinaya should be established." My hearers should recite the foundation of training in the Vinaya in this way: "If any monk knowingly enters a house for the purpose of dalliance and sits on a seat, it is a downfall." "Any monk" refers to Charka, or anyone else like him. "Knowingly" means that he himself knows, or that others have told him. "For the purpose of dalliance" means that a woman is the object of dalliance for a man, and a man is the object of dalliance for a woman. "In a house" means in the house of a Brahmin or a householder. "Having entered secretly" means having entered secretly. "On a seat" means on the ground. "Sits" means that he places his buttocks within a cubit. "It is a downfall" means that it burns, torments, and causes to fall into sentient hells, animals, hungry ghosts, bad destinies, evil paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, as long as the downfall is not confessed and separately confessed, it obstructs virtuous dharmas. Therefore, it is said to be a downfall. How does one incur a downfall? If a monk knowingly enters a house for the purpose of dalliance and sits on a seat, he incurs a complete downfall. The first offender and the insane
