What is that like? "Knowing" means being aware of it oneself, or being told by others. "With living beings" means that there are two kinds of living beings: those that appear before one's eyes, and those that are caught by the water strainer. "Using water" means that there are two kinds of water use: internal and external. Internal use is bathing, drinking, discarding toothpicks, and washing hands and feet. External use is washing the alms bowl, washing the small alms bowl, washing the Dharma robes, doing color work, sweeping in the temple, sewing, and smearing with cow dung. "Falling into sin" means burning beings in hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil realms, evil paths, and places of depravity, tormenting, and causing them to fall. Furthermore, if the sin is not confessed, and not confessed separately, it will obscure the good Dharma. Therefore, it is said "falling into sin." So, how does one fall into sin? If a monk knowingly uses water with living beings, he will commit a sin of falling. If a monk uses water with living beings with doubt in his mind, he will commit a sin of falling. If a monk uses water without living beings, thinking it has living beings, he will commit a minor offense. If a monk uses water without living beings with doubt in his mind, he will commit a minor offense. If a monk eats melted butter with living beings, grain oil, honey, molasses, milk, yogurt, and butter, he will commit a sin of falling. If a monk drinks salt with living beings, grain salt, yogurt water, and coarse water, he will commit a sin of falling. If a monk eats fruits and pickles with living beings, he will commit a sin of falling. There is no sin of falling for beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by sensations. The sin of falling for using water with living beings, the forty-first, is complete. Buddha, the Bhagavan.
