Not falling into the danger of disturbed minds and feelings. The forty-second transgression of dwelling in a house preparing for sexual intercourse is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika. The venerable Ajuka, knowing the principle of the wish-fulfilling jewel, dressed in the morning, took his bowl and robes, and entered Shravasti for alms. In Shravasti, there was a young incense seller who had recently married. When he displayed his goods, an inappropriate thought arose in his mind, thinking, 'I will go and enjoy pleasure with my wife.' He began to collect his goods. The venerable Ajuka saw this and thought, 'Now other merchants are displaying their goods, why is this incense seller collecting his goods?' He also thought, 'This person has recently married, he probably wants to enjoy pleasure with his wife, I will go and see him.' So he went to that house first and stood peeking behind the door. After that, the young incense seller came, and he led his wife into the room. The girl saw Ajuka standing alone and said to her husband, 'The son of the king, the venerable Ajuka, is standing behind the door.' The young incense seller said, 'The venerable Ajuka is experiencing the bliss of meditation, liberation, and samadhi in the temple and is standing.' Having said that, he enjoyed pleasure with his wife. When he was free from that entanglement, he saw Ajuka. Those Shakya's renunciates scolded, 'The behavior of renunciates is false, the behavior of Brahmins is false, that they have no autonomy over their own wives.' They blamed, slandered, and reviled. Those renunciates with few desires questioned, 'Why do renunciates knowingly stand alone in a hidden place in a house preparing for sexual intercourse?' They blamed, slandered, and reviled. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan.

Then, the Blessed One said that this event, this origin, and the gathering of the Sangha of monks at this time, etc., are all as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, etc., are also as before. The Blessed One rebuked the venerable Charka, saying: Charka, is it true that you knowingly stood in a secluded, sheltered place in a house where men and women engage in sexual intercourse? Venerable, it is true. The Blessed One rebuked him, saying: This is not the conduct of a proper renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, and it is not something that a renunciant should do. Then, after rebuking him in various ways, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, you should truly see the ten benefits and establish the foundation of learning for the hearers in the Vinaya, etc., all as before. My hearers should recite the foundation of learning in the Vinaya as follows: If any monk knowingly stands in a secluded, sheltered place in a house where men and women engage in sexual intercourse, he commits a Patayantika offense. Moreover, what is a monk? It refers to Charka, or others of the same kind. What does it mean to knowingly? It means that he himself knows, or others tell him. What is a house where men and women engage in sexual intercourse? It means that a woman is a man's place of sexual intercourse, and a man is a woman's place of sexual intercourse. What is a house? It refers to the house of a Brahmin or a householder. What is a secluded place? It refers to a place where there are no women, men, hermaphrodites, or other people. What is a sheltered place? It refers to being sheltered by five things, namely being sheltered by a wall, being sheltered by a fence, being sheltered by a curtain, being sheltered by dense trees, and being sheltered by a sign. What does it mean to stand? It means to stand in a span of land. What does it mean to commit a Patayantika offense? It means to burn, torment, and fall into sentient hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, evil paths, and wrong views. Furthermore, if this Patayantika offense is not confessed and not individually confessed, it will obstruct virtuous dharmas, therefore it is a Patayantika offense.

Thus he spoke. So, how does one fall? If a monk, knowing even a little, stays in a house prepared for sexual intercourse, thinking there is a secluded place of refuge, then everything will lead to a fall. There is no fall for beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by suffering. The fall of staying in a house prepared for sexual intercourse, this concludes the forty-third precept. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying in Rajagriha, in the grove of light, at the place of Kalandaka. Then, many merchants from Rajagriha went to where the Bhagavan was, bowed their heads at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Bhagavan taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted the many merchants of Rajagriha with a discourse in accordance with the Dharma. In various ways, he taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted them with a discourse in accordance with the Dharma, and then remained silent. Then, the many merchants of Rajagriha, greatly pleased and rejoiced at the Bhagavan's words, bowed their heads at the feet of the Bhagavan, and departing from the presence of the Bhagavan, went to where the venerable Ananda was, bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Ananda, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ananda taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted the many merchants of Rajagriha with words in accordance with the Dharma. In various ways, he taught, guided, encouraged, and delighted them with words in accordance with the Dharma, and then remained silent. Then, the many merchants of Rajagriha rose from their seats, placed their upper garments on one shoulder, and, with palms joined in reverence, turned towards where the venerable Ananda was. Venerable
