Having begun to establish thus, by the power of that aspiration, the Tathagata is now shown as the supreme among those skilled in subduing the mind. Monks, therefore, the result of completely black actions is also completely black, and the result of completely white actions is also completely white, and the result of mixed actions is also mixed. Monks, therefore, one should abandon completely black and mixed actions, and one should cultivate completely white actions. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. There is no offense for the first offender, the insane, the deranged in mind, and those afflicted by feelings. The twenty-first offense, spoken without designation, is complete. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. The Bhagavan said, "Joy-maker, you should instruct the nuns." "Joy-maker, you should teach the nuns." "Joy-maker, you should exhort the nuns with speech in accordance with the Dharma." Having said this, five hundred nuns with lotus-colored bodies went to where the venerable Joy-maker was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Joy-maker and sat down on one side. The venerable Joy-maker thought, "Women's wisdom is shallow." So, he taught them the Dharma in a concise way, containing meaning, words, and letters. Because they were wise, they kept asking from higher and higher, and the venerable Joy-maker answered them one by one. He taught them the Dharma until it was time for the sun to set. Then, they bowed their heads at his feet, rose from their seats, and left. When the gates of Shravasti were closed, the nuns looked for the gate. The gatekeeper said, "The gate is closed." They said, "Open it, the keys are in the king's palace." They thought, "Let's stay here." So, not far from Shravasti, there was a garden, and they went there. The Bhagavan said, "Even trees should be managed by the elderly."

After such teachings, they began to decorate with old trees. At that time, those trees made loud and great sounds to the gatekeepers, calling out, "Aya, Ahad, Aga, E, Aga Had." About five hundred wicked ones who wanted to destroy Shravasti came, and when they heard that loud and great sound, they said, "Wise ones, stay in Shravasti for a while! Wise ones, let us destroy these before the venerable nuns' retinue hears of it!" Lotus Color thought, "Will it not be discovered by some unsightly thing?" When she saw about five hundred wicked ones who wanted to destroy, she conjured up an army of noble ones and beat drums and cymbals. They said, "Wise ones, if we are surrounded and caught by the army of noble ones, it will not be good, let us flee!" Having realized this, they fled. Lotus Color said to those nuns, "Sisters, about five hundred wicked ones who wanted to destroy came here, and I frightened them and made them run away. Gently, slowly open the door with gestures!" They got up early the next morning and entered Shravasti. Brahmins and householders saw them and said, "The Shakyaputra shramanas have corrupted the Dharma, and especially corrupting and practicing pure conduct is good. Why do the monks with few desires, why do the monks teach the nuns until sunset?" They began to scold, throw things, and speak harshly. At this time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, because of this event, this origin, and this occasion, convened the Sangha of monks, etc., as before. Do the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, act knowingly? etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the venerable Ananda: "Ananda, is it true that you teach the nuns until sunset?" "Venerable One, yes." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked all kinds of actions that are not diligent, not effortful, and not careful.

Having praised, the Blessed One then praised the merits of diligence, effort, and acting with prudence, and then instructed the monks: Monks, therefore, you should truly observe the ten benefits and establish the foundation of learning for the Shravakas in the Vinaya Pitaka, etc., as mentioned before. My Shravakas should recite the learning in the Vinaya Pitaka as follows: If a monk, even if appointed by the Sangha, teaches the Dharma to a Bhikshuni before sunset, he commits a Patayantika offense. A monk means one who belongs to this Dharma. Sangha means the Sangha of the Tathagata's Shravakas. Appointed means through solicitation and two karmas. Before sunset means when the time of sunset arrives. Bhikshuni means one who belongs to this Dharma. Teaching the Dharma means higher discipline, higher mind, and higher wisdom. Patayantika offense means burning, boiling, and falling into sentient hells, animals, hungry ghosts, evil destinies, bad paths, and places of wrong views. Furthermore, as long as this Patayantika offense is not confessed and not individually confessed, it will obstruct virtuous Dharmas. Therefore, it is called a Patayantika offense. So, how does it become a Patayantika offense? If a monk perceives that the sun has set when it has set, and teaches the Dharma to a Bhikshuni, he commits a Patayantika offense. If a monk doubts whether the sun has set or not, and teaches the Dharma to a Bhikshuni, he commits a Patayantika offense. If a monk perceives that the sun has set when it has not set, and teaches the Dharma to a Bhikshuni, he commits a Dushkrita offense. If a monk doubts whether the sun has not set or not, and teaches the Dharma to a Bhikshuni, he commits a Dushkrita offense. There is no Patayantika offense in listening to the Dharma in a covered place, teaching the Dharma at the gate of a monastery, sitting in a place without a latch, in a monastery or summer residence within a city, and going to another residence to teach the Dharma. There is no Patayantika offense for beginners, the insane, the mentally disturbed, and those afflicted by suffering. Monks, the one who gives rise to doubts and cuts off all doubts is the Buddha, the Blessed One.
