When the qualities of this are not manifestly known, one enters into disrespect for it. When the qualities become manifestly known, one touches both feet and asks for forgiveness. The monks asked the Blessed One Buddha: "Venerable Lampeya, what deeds did he do that, as a result of those deeds, the Blessed One prophesied him to be the best of those skilled in transforming minds?" The Blessed One said: "It is by the power of aspiration." Where did he make the aspiration? Monks, in the past, in the teaching of the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, when this one became ordained, the preceptor from whom he was ordained was also prophesied by the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector to be the best of those skilled in transforming minds. At that time, this one practiced celibacy for as long as he lived, but did not attain any accumulation of merit. Then, at the time of death, he made this aspiration: "Before the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha, the unsurpassed in qualities, Light Protector, I practiced celibacy for as long as I lived, but did not attain any accumulation of merit. By this root of virtue of practicing celibacy for as long as I lived, may the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha Light Protector, when prophesying to the Brahmin boy Lama, say: 'Brahmin boy, in the future, when the life span of beings reaches one hundred years, you will become the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Blissful One, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, the Blessed One Buddha Shakyamuni.' May I be ordained in his teaching, abandon all defilements, realize the state of Arhat, and just as this preceptor was prophesied by the Blessed One, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha Light Protector to be the best of those skilled in transforming minds, may I also be prophesied by the Blessed One Shakyamuni, the Lion of the Shakyas, the chief of the Shakya kings, to be the best of those skilled in transforming minds."
