Then, the Venerable Lampa touched Jivaka's feet with his head, asked for forgiveness, and said in verse: Sandalwood always possesses the virtue of coolness, lotus always possesses the fragrance of purity, like the ever-bright and pure light of lapis lazuli, the sins of ordinary people are always like the unchanging patterns of the unparalleled Gorma, the noble ones always possess great compassion, and the forgiveness of the Arhats is steadfast. The Venerable Lampa said: Jivaka, please forgive me! After the Blessed One declared the merits, he rose from his seat and departed. The monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable, when Jivaka the youth healed with medicine, when he did not know the merits of the Venerable Lampa, he was not respectful; when he knew the merits, he touched his feet with his head and asked for forgiveness. Monks, not only now, but also in the past, when he did not know the merits of this person, he was not respectful; when he knew the merits, he touched his feet with his head and asked for forgiveness, listen to this. Monks, in the past, a caravan leader from the northern road drove five hundred horses carrying goods to the central region. A wise foal was conceived in the womb of that mare, and from the day that foal was conceived, those horses no longer made a sound, and the caravan leader thought: Are my horses sick? Why don't these horses make a sound? At other times, that mare gave birth to a colt, and from the day that colt was born, those horses no longer tried to make a snorting sound, and the caravan leader thought: Since this unlucky foal was born, because of this foal's fault, my horses have become ill, so he always rode that mare and did not give it grass or fodder. Eventually, they arrived at a place called "Offering Place", and it was summer, and he thought: If I continue to go forward, the horses' hooves will rot, and the goods will not be able to be transported.

Thinking, 'I shall stay here for the summer because of the transition,' he indeed stayed there for the summer. The craftsmen who lived there served him with their respective crafts. When it was time for him to leave, the craftsmen gathered, and he distributed things to them. There was a potter there, and he also served him with his craft, so the potter's wife said to him, 'Prince's son, captain, please ask for something.' The potter sat before the noble captain holding a lump of clay. The captain saw him and said to him, 'Alas, you have come too late, I have given all the benefits to others.' The captain had an inauspicious thought about the donkey foal, so the captain said to the potter, 'Like this, I have a donkey foal, if you want it, take it away.' The potter said, 'No, I will be making pottery, and it will break the pottery too.' Then, the donkey foal began to lick the potter's two feet. The potter developed affection for the donkey foal, so he took it and went home. His wife said to him, 'Prince's son, did you get something from him?' 'I got this donkey foal.' 'No, you will be making pottery, and it will break the pottery too.' The donkey foal again began to lick the wife's two feet, and the wife also developed affection for the donkey foal. The donkey foal walked among the fired and unfired pottery, but did not break any of the pottery, so the potter said to his wife, 'This is a good donkey foal, it knows how to walk.' Another time, the potter went to fetch soil with a winnowing basket, and the donkey foal also followed closely behind. The potter filled the winnowing basket with soil, and the donkey foal supported it with its back. The potter put the winnowing basket full of soil on the donkey foal's back, and then led it home, and the potter said to his wife, 'Good wife, this is a good donkey foal, I will not have to carry soil anymore.' 'I will pile the soil there, and you hit it here.' The wife said 'Good,' and hit the donkey foal with a duster and beans.

Blessings were bestowed. At that time, in Varanasi, a king named Brahmadatta ruled the kingdom with wealth, prosperity, peace, good harvests, filled with beings and people, with strife, war, riots, and internal conflicts completely pacified, free from thieves, famine, and disease, allowing salu, strings of sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo to flourish, allowing a righteous king endowed with dharma to rule a righteous kingdom with dharma. When his divine horse came of age, the kings under the sun heard that King Brahmadatta's divine horse had come of age, and they sent him messages saying: Either pay tribute, or do not appear in the gardens outside Varanasi. If you do not do so, you will be tied by the neck and dragged away. King Brahmadatta neither paid tribute to them, nor did he appear in the gardens outside the city out of fear. That caravan leader eventually arrived in Varanasi, and King Brahmadatta heard that a caravan leader had driven five hundred packhorses from the northern route to Varanasi, and he said to his ministers: Wise ones, how long must I remain here? Seek out the divine horse today. They went to that caravan leader, and after seeing those horses, they said to each other: Wise ones, these horses have all been tamed by the divine horse, but no divine horse is to be seen here. They saw the mare and said: Wise ones, if the divine horse came from this mare, it cannot be seen. They went to the caravan leader and asked: Caravan leader, have you sold any horses, or given them to others? The caravan leader said: I have not sold any, but I thought that a foal in a place of sacrifice was inauspicious, so I gave it to a potter. They said to each other: Wise ones, this caravan leader is a fool, having abandoned the essence and driven the dregs here. They reported to the king and went to the place of sacrifice, and they went to the potter and asked: Do you have a foal?
